Am the type who likes my high-intensity exercises, the kind of adrenaline high gym rats get from spinning, cross circuit training and the like.
However, yoga is also something I take solace in when I want to slow down. It’s a different universe altogether when you make time for it, as opposed to the noise of a cycling studio. There’s no choice but to absorb the silence when the yoga teacher tells you to breathe properly, meditate, focus, extend those legs and do back bending exercises…phew!
Though am no yoga veteran, here are things to remember for newbies or first-timers out there who want to engage in this exercise:
1. Don’t come on a full stomach. Take something light before class such as fruits, oatmeal or high-fiber snack bars. You need to feel light to feel nimble for those poses and inversions.
2. Hydration is a must, so bring your water bottle. You will feel thirsty when you’re sweating a lot, and there will definitely be water breaks.
3. Comfort is key. Wear yoga outfits that will allow for uninterrupted movement of the body during those long stretches. There are a lot of online stores selling figure-flattering yoga pants and tops. Their prices are reasonable too and hassle-free shipping is provided.
4. Yoga is all about discipline. Even if you forget about it, your instructor will explain the rules. No coming late, no cellphones and definitely no noise while in class.
Have a happy yoga day! 🙂
