Family homes are, by their very nature, cluttered. With children and adults and sometimes even pets running around, there’s no shortage of sources of dirt and disarray. For the adults in the house, it can feel like cleaning is a never-ending task that will continue daily until the children move out, and in some households this is more true than in others.
There are ways, however, to overcome the clutter of a family home, and they aren’t as expensive as hiring a cleaner or as arduous as committing to minimalism. To make your life a little easier, we have arranged a short guide on some ways to overcome the clutter of a family home, and we hope that it will decrease the time you spent clearing and cleaning.
BEDROOMS
The bedrooms are almost always the messiest part of the house, as these are the private rooms that are rarely shared with guests. Because of this privacy, people tend to think that it’s nobody else’s business how messy their rooms are, and they’d be right in most situations, but as a family home can prove, these rooms can begin to have an effect on the rest of the house’s cleanliness within a very short amount of time. Teenagers are taught to clean the house and maintain a certain level of orderliness through their room, and this is one of the few exceptions to the rule of “their room, their mess”. If their rooms are not being kept clean of food waste,9 it can attract insects and other vermin, which can spill out into the house in search of more food at night.
BATHROOMS
Bathrooms are the places where we clean ourselves, so it’s no wonder they get dirty so quickly. The number one culprit for mildew-esque smells in the bathroom is wet towels left on the floor, and convincing an entire household to hang these up after using them can be nearly impossible. An elegant solution is to place laundry baskets in each bathroom, for bath mats and towels when they are sufficiently soaking wet. This won’t prevent the towels from getting mildewy, but it will localise it all to one spot, and it will be easier to throw it in the machine when the basket is full.
KITCHEN
Your kitchen is the source of all of your food, and thus is more volatile with it’s cleanliness than most other rooms. A perfectly clean kitchen can be decimated with the creation of a single meal, and a dirty kitchen can be cleaned to spotless within an hour or so with the right application of hard work.
Keeping your kitchen clean is more simple if you implement the easy-to-follow rule of “wash it as soon as you’ve used it”. This is often forgotten when we say we’ll “do it later”, but sticking to this rule steadfastly regardless of time restraints is the best way to ensure the kitchen stays more clean for longer.

With these tips, your house can remain clean for longer, despite the presence of other, tiny humans that have spent their whole lives till now being cleaned up after. Today is the day they take responsibility for their own cleaning, so stick to your word and enjoy your clean home!
