Its smell is pungent and the taste is quite indescribable but I have a newfound love affair with… kimchi.I don’t know how this came to be, I even saw Korean tourists eating the stuff for breakfast in Boracay last year and said “yikes!”
Now it seems I have acquired the taste for it and can even eat it at 1 a.m. (while on the early morning shift, of course). Kimchi with crispy pata/ deep-fried pork knuckles (see picture) – yum! Kimchi with adobo and garlic rice – yummy!
Of course it helps that my present job deals with lots of Koreans. I do agree that they’re everywhere now on these sunny islands – in our tourist spots, on TV, in the airwaves, in the shopping malls. Heck, even the spas, restos and groceries are now owned by these Koreans (just like in New York!). I don’t see anything bad in this. Their numbers and their wons are what we need to keep our sinking economy alive. As expected, I hear locals speaking negatively of these Korean bugs but beggars can’t be choosers really. All we need is that thing we have little of – cultural tolerance.
Some Korean phrases I have learned lately:
an nyong haseyo – good morning/afternoon/evening
ja oso – please
johayo – OK
sille hamnida – excuse me
daedanhi kamsamnida – thank you very much
dulo oseyo – come in please
jamshiman gidaryo juseyo – just a moment
