All the basic things aside, there are three things I can’t live without for a day. These are a) kissing & hugging my honeybunnies ~ all three of them; b) logging on the net, to check emails & such; and c) drinking my coffee, approximately two to three cups in all.
I know, two to three a day isn’t so bad considering that other people consume as much as 7 to eight cups of espresso a day. Still one of my NY resolutions is to cut down on my caffeine. I just thought I was addicted since I can’t start my morning without it.But information I read from the Philippine Graphic magazine may just change my mind about the bad effects of coffee (hope it’s not from the pro-coffee lobby group). It lists the following benefits:
– A Harvard School of Public Health Study “among 42,000 healthy men and more than 84,000 healthy women” from the 1980s through 1998 found that “men who had more than six cups of coffee a day lowered the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50%.” Among the women, the reduction was 30%.
– Other studies suggest that regular coffee drinkers are up tp 80% less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, colon cancer (by 25%), liver cirrhosis (by 80%) and gallstones (50%).
– Caffeine acts as a bronchodilator, e.g. opens up constricted passageways which may be favorable to chronic asthma sufferers.
– A number of pain-killers contain caffeine owing to its analgesic properties;
– Coffee props up a person’s endurance, hence the International Olympic Committee lists caffeine as a controlled substance which can only be consumed in limited amounts by competing athletes.
– This Forbes article also reveals that coffee competes with vital fruits such as grapes to be a main source of antioxidants which prevent aging.
Having said so, instant Nescafe just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Seasoned coffee drinkers after all like them brewed. And of the commercial varieties available in Manila, I’ve found out that anything hot from Mocha Blends will keep me awake for hours on end (helpful for my graveyard duties). Although getting a cup from Figaro will not hurt me since it’s one of the perks provided my company, ditto with the Gloria Jean’s vanilla caramel latte which I’ve developed a craving for lately. I think that the pastries in Starbucks sucks but the best piece of cheaply-priced tiramisu heaven comes from Seattle’s Best.

Well, coffee is still better than nicotine. Wish I can kick this habit. I stopped drinking coffee a long time ago. Hmm, coffee goes well with cigarettes after a hearty meal, right? hmmmmm….

Kudos to coffee. I can’t start my day without my pressed coffee. My husband sent me an article by Willow Lawson of Psychology today stating that “coffee drinkers have a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, a disease that’s poised to be a huge health threat in the fattest of Western nations. “. I’m diabetic so it’s all good.

I read an article about the benefits of coffee some time ago, too. But it did not say anything about asthma. But now that I know, I’ve gotta have at least 2 cups a day. It’s cheaper than doctor’s prescription like Seretide (an inhaler) which is Php 1,250.00 per.

Sha, am surprised to know you’re a tea-drinker. Ako naman I feel that my energy is low without coffee:???:
I never tried coffee with cigarets Tito Rolly:grin: maybe because i never smoked?? lol
Yes Noemi, recent studies linking coffee drinking with reduced risk for diabetes is heartening. it’s too early to be believed but it should be a good sign
Morfin, do try Milo with instant coffee..yummy ~ result is actually cafe mocha:wink:
Karl, no harm in trying & hope it’s effective for you. Expensive pala ang magka-asthma

I stopped smoking in 1984, and I stopped drinking coffee a few years ago. In some ways it was harder to stop the coffee. Recently I started drinking coffee again, mainly because it warms me up in the winter

Hi Miden. Yeah, I like drinking my coffee with donuts (not in the morning though) even though I know that the latter packs killer calories.
Ed, thanks for a-visiting here. Yes, I wonder whether I can stop the coffee but I will probably not try anymore now that they’re claiming some of the benefits that drinking it brings:smile:

Sha, I was drinking tea with milk when I was in the UK.. adapting ba. It’s nice to know that you dig tea so much. At least when I see you, I know what to give you (teapot, not tea, haha)
