I saw quite a few branches of Tenya back in Japan; in fact, I think this chain started as a modest joint in Tokyo Station. Now, if you’re crazy about tempura or simply curious what Tenya is, you don’t have to fly all the way to Tokyo because they are steadily increasing their presence in the Philippines, with nine branches so far in Metro Manila.
The latest and ninth branch of Tenya Philippines is the one in Tiendesitas, Pasig. It is their showcase restaurant and their biggest so far, with a seating area in the ground floor that can accommodate 80 people and an equally spacious second floor which can be closed of for private functions for up to 40 people.
The design element is, of course Japanese and we love that the ambiance is all bright and airy.
“We are happy to open our 9th branch in Tiendesitas,” said Mr. Chukri Prieto, one of the owners. “We continue to aim to provide our customers with high quality tendon
and tempura dishes at an affordable price. Many of the ingredients we use are from Japan to ensure we provide the best tasting dishes.”
Tenya’s specialty is the tendon which is the shortened form of tempura + donburi, thus it is a rice bowl with tempura on top.
There are a number of reasons why Tenya deserves a visit, and foremost is that they’ve perfected the art of frying using infrared heat technology. The result is perfectly crispy and crunchy tempura that has the right amount of breading. Then the dish is finished off with their signature sauce dontare sauce using a special recipe by a 200-year old boutique soy sauce factory in Japan.
When in Tenya, make sure to check out the Ultimate Crab tendon. This has crab claw, soft-shell crab, crablets, kani kakiage, black tiger prawn and crab fat or aligue sauce. Definitely, a must-try for the seafood lover.
The Teishoku or set meals are value for money. I ordered the All Star Teishoku which had four or five kinds of tempura, choice of noodles (soba or udon), miso soup, potato salad and dessert. For only P395, it’s definitely worth it and is good enough to fill you up.
I had this cute-looking dessert to go with my teishoku meal. This was ice cream, popcorn bits and a cartoon-shaped pancake with red bean filling. Oishi!
Aside from its main tempura offerings, Tenya also has a selection of appetizers, salads, ramen, maki with assorted toppings and even sandwiches priced at only P145.
Tenya’s Metro Manila branches are in SM Megamall, Market! Market!, BGC Stopover, Paseo de Magallanes, SM Mall of Asia, Aseana City, Festival Mall, SM Southmall and Tiendesitas.
