Friends and kin have been asking if my little family is fine in the aftermath of typhoon Glenda. We have been surviving with no power for three days now :) The brownout started early morning of Wednesday (along with a cut-off in water supply) and I can only believe Meralco when they say it will restored by 10 tonight. I hope so... please give us a reason to rejoice this weekend! The water has come back but 60 hours (and counting) of no electricity is just so cruel. Am still trying to figure out which was worse: Typhoon Milenyo or Glenda. I dug through my archives ... Continue Reading...
Meralco recalls December 2013 electricity bill
Like most people, I was one of those who wasn't pleased when our latest electricity bill arrived last December 2013. How can I.... our household usage remained the same but the rate increased to 20 percent compared to the previous month. Reason given was the increased charges imposed on Meralco by power generating companies as a result of the Malampaya shutdown. Whatever. It's frustrating when all the saving on power, not using the aircon etc. doesn't translate to a lower electric bill...if you know what we mean. Imagine the relief when I, along with millions of ... Meralco: yes, you can lower your electric bill!
It still stumps me to be living in a country with one of the highest power rates in the world. Yes you heard it, the cost of our electricity is more expensive than Singapore or Japan. You can just imagine how much of the low-salaried Pinoy's monthly budget goes to paying for power (sigh) In other countries, the cost of electricity is subsidized by the government - hence, their lower rates. Also, the Philippines has fared badly in developing its power industry - whether coal, geothermal, hydro or some other. As such, consumers like us have to pay for the cost of ... Continue Reading...
Meralco to offer prepaid electricity soon
And we thought prepaid was only for mobile phones! It was quite a surprise hearing from the country's main electricity distributor Meralco that they will be offering prepaid kuryente soon (and that's hopefully before the end of the year!) The words are from Meralco VP and chief IT architect (aka CIO) Marthyn Cuan who explained that they will be catering to certain market segments in need of prepaid service. Among these are those who have second homes and "informal settlers" who are not usually able to comply with paper requirements needed to apply for an ... Continue Reading...
Electricity cost & a Pinoy Eats World dinner
The bad news: cost of electricity went up as of the last Meralco billing. Good thing gas prices are going down. Here's one thing I can share to fellow mommies who are always tracking the budget: using an induction cooker is as economical and as energy-efficient as using an LPG stove. It is also safer since it doesn't pose a fire hazard, unlike an LPG-powered unit. If you live in a condo, this is a must! This handy tip I got from Meralco people themselves who organized an intimate get-together centered on induction cooking. Venue was the secret Makati location of ... Continue Reading...
