When the 2013 UPCAT results were released last week, local netizens made a fiesta out of the name of one successful examinee Sincerely Yours ’98. She’s nicknamed Truly and has two other siblings: Spaghetti ’88 and Macaroni ’85. The numbers stand for their date of birth.
Spaghetti ’88 has since gotten married and has a son named Cheese Pimiento. And here’s the birth cert (photo & details via my kumare Ivy Lisa Mendoza)
Our friend, Prof. Rolando de la Cruz, CEO of Darwin International School in Bulacan where Sincerely Yours (nicknamed Truly) graduated, explained that the parents are simply jolly good people who didn’t hesitate to break the monotony of the world with the strangeness of their children’s names.
“The names of the kids might sound funny to people. But these names reflect how much they enjoy and respect life. The names are unique, reflect in the uniqueness of the members. The names are down-to-earth, reflecting how much they enjoy daily living,” Prof. Rolly said.
In this ever-growing country of 100 million people, strange names are probably not a rarity. Here’s what other people contributed via Facebook and Rappler of true-to-life Filipino names that are funny and/or far from common:

While working in a children’s hospital, I realized how new couples loved John Lloyd. I processed over 50 papers of kids who were all named John Lloyd in a span of 4 months, some of them even had Cruz as a last name. I feel bad for the actor, many kids are named after him everyday; must be tough when your name is that common. Still, nothing beats that kid named Lil’Wayne.

I used to work with someone who had used “Alfredo _______ (surname), Jr. all his life. When he needed to apply for a passport, he discovered for the first time that his birth certificate says “Baby Boy _______ (surname). His parents forgot to give him a name, and that was how the hospital registered his birth!

It’s nice that the parents have a sense of humor (I had a good laugh over some of the names), pero sana they won’t give their kids the burden of having a name which will surely make them the laughing stock. Kasi there are some talaga na they think they’re so cool and/or creative for giving crazy names to their kids. Dapat nilang isipin na the names are FOR THE KIDS, not for them.

I’m a doctor and we encounter patients with strange names on a daily basis. Notable first names we encountered included a baby girl named Gwiyomhe. There’s this “belief” we have at work that the kids with strange names and those “royal” names like “king”, “queen”, “prince” and “princess” are often the sickly ones. Hehe.
We had a contractor whose company name is FRUITAS. His surname is AVOCADO while her wife’s CHICO.
