If the Philippines has its halo-halo and South Korea has its bingsu, then Japan also has its homegrown kakigori shaved ice dessert. Expect this cold concoction to have the attention to details of the Japanese – from the quality and consistency of the ice to the creaminess of the sauce to the exquisiteness of the toppings. It’s a must try for those with a sweet tooth.
Shari Shari Kakigori House first made waves in Hong Kong and now it’s opening in doors for the first time in the Philippines, with its maiden branch in the ground floor of Serendra, Bonifacio Global City. Owner Darlene Chua-Lim takes pride in the fact that everything is of Japanese quality – from the machines (Made in Japan, of course!) to the interiors and the flavors.
The Matcha Cream Special is highly recommended. It has kuromitsu (brown sugar) syrup then topped with cookies and whipped cream. Nothing could be more Japanese than this, right?
If matcha is not your cup of tea, then opt for the Japanese Tofu and Mikan Orange Kakigori. This was pretty mild but it also tasted oh-so-healthy. Which is what happens when tofu meets fruit and dusted with kinako powder.
If you love Japan’s Zen principles, then by all means try Earl Grey Milk Tea. It’s not sencha all right, but if you wanna imagine drinking tea cold, this comes off as pretty authentic. It has all the right flavors of dark tea!
One winning option in the menu is the Cantaloupe Melon Kakigori which is drizzled with refreshing melon syrup, whipped cream and bits of melon topping. It tastes very refreshing and the good news is that this flavor is only available in the Philippines.
Because the icy desserts are mostly fruit-based, there will be a rotation of dishes based on what’s in season. Which also means that there will always be new ones to try 🙂
Here’s another must-try: the Strawberry Special.
All Shari Shari Kakigori selections are good for sharing. Prices range from P270 to P360.
