This photo probably doesn’t give justice to the delicious lunch I had today. But at 11:30 this morning, I felt this intense craving for some filling soup..not nilaga or sinigang but shabu-shabu. Thankfully, I was able to convince my officemates to go with me and try this place near our new office building, the Lau Chan Hotpot on Mabini St. You know the place is authentic because it is simply teeming with the Chinese who gulp their soup with so much gusto, you can almost see them sweat.
I thought shabu-shabu is Korean but is originally Japanese and literally means “swish-swish.” What I like about it is that you can cook the meal at your table. Now how could an absolute no-brainer way of cooking taste so delicious? We choose dumplings, spinach leaves, squid balls, chinese cabbage, noodles and thinly-sliced sirloin beef to put in the briskly-boiling pot. All this go with the dipping sauce, of course. Not content, we order for yang chow fried rice, roast pork and steamed chicken on the a la carte menu. So much for dieting…yum!
