Workers in the government and private sector in the Philippines brace for a long weekend next week as President Aquino proclaimed September 10 a regular holiday to observe Eid’l Fitr or the end of the holy month of Ramadan. September 10 falls on a Friday.
The declaration is contained in Proclamation No. 26 signed by the President. “To promote cultural understanding and integration, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr,” it states.
Eid’l Fitr or Eid is the festival when Muslims end their holy month of fasting or Ramadan. In the Philippines, the Eid’l Fitr holiday is legalized by virtue of Republic Act No. 9177 signed on November 13, 2002.
The remaining holidays for 2010 in the Philippines are the following:
November 1 – All Saints’ day
Bonifacio Day – exact date of observance is November 30
Christmas Eve – December 24 (additional special non-working day)
Christmas Day – December 25
Rizal Day – December 30
New Year’s Eve – December 31 ( last day of the year)

What Eid means to me..bombings were rare during Ramadan, while in Iraq. Once Ramadan ended, punctuated by Eid, it was game on again. Remember my boss texting me, wishing me a “Happy Eid”, while his base was being bombed in 2008.
Looking forward to a quieter Eid for 2010, both here and in the Middle East. I hope.
