Eating Japanese was the best thing that happened to me this Saturday. It was at Sakae Sushi in Mall of Asia, reputed to have the city’s longest kaiten or conveyor belt. It’s the nearest thing you can have to those places in Japan, only that this one is a Singaporean chain.
See the plates passing by th conveyor belt? They’re color-coded. Purple plates are priced at P39, yellow at P59, green at P79 and red at P99. Sakae Sushi’s eat-all-you can buffet has been packing them in among Asians living in Manila, we heard. Read this sign, the sign looks like something we can try again and again 😛
We had the privilege of going inside the kitchen and got a peek of their sushi robots. The machines wash the rice, cooks it, mixes it and finally molds the rice into the desired sushi shape. Mr. Z thinks it takes the romance out of sushi-making where chefs are known to observe a tedious process. I do think that in this modern age, it’s the way to go! The machines look expensive though….
Heck, even the hot tea comes from a table-side dispenser. Sencha or Japanese green tea is what my “eatmates” Melo, Nina and Chrissie ordered to go with their food.
When you prefer food other than sushi, the restaurant has an extensive menu of Japanese specialties. I’d really like to try their kaminabe selection next time. It’s seafood, meats, and vegetables in clear broth that is placed in “burn-proof paper bowl” before being set on top of a burner.
Food, food, food!
I dig the fact that you can get a good Japanese meal at Sakae Sushi for as little as P250 (approximately $5)!

Wow, that’s a sweet deal. Very reasonable. We tried something like that in HK along Tsim Sha Tsui. The place was a little hip at night because aside from the color coded plates, the lights are very playful.
Wits, I saw something like this with the conveyor belt in KL too. The chain was called Sushi King. Looking forward to trying more of Sakae Sushi 😉
Don’t go to Sakae Sushi. The food is horrible and overpriced. They do well in Singapore because people don’t have other choice… they failed badly in countries that know what Japanese food are.

sakae sushi is big here in Singapore 🙂 the price is so much cheaper in Manila though! Yay!
I’ve seen this restaurant before at MOA but haven’t tried yet.
It reminds me of sushi bars in Tokyo.

Want good Japanese food? Then stay away from Sakae Sushi.
How are the sashimis? The tuna looked kinda dark on the top part.. are they fresh?

I find the selection very interesting – and I have to agree that there ARE other sucky Jap food places out there, and Sakae Sushi isn’t one of them..

hi Ajay. I beg to disagree on your all-praise about Sakae Sushi. I have tried once and absolutely a crap. If you were seating beside me, babatukan talaga kita. Don’t deceive people by your good comments about a certain establishment. Let your tastebud works, dear.

Don’t bother going to this restaurant. They serve god-awful sushi at extremely outrageous prices.
Save up your moolah, and go to decent Japanese restaurants in the metro instead.
