Breakfast is a big deal for me. I need a good one in order to function and be energized throughout the day. My favorite these days is the filling combo of boiled saba banana and boiled egg. You know why I choose these? Because they’re the healthy option, and it’s a necessity for old people like me, haha.
The most convenient choice actually is a good bowl of oatmeal. You just open a pack, mix with milk or hot water and put whatever you want in there: fruits, chocolate chips, honey….the list is endless.
Everybody’s favorite Quaker Oats recently invited us for an interactive afternoon cooking with the lovely chef Xandra Rocha Araneta. She showed us the many ways we can experiment with Quaker Oats. The basic idea is to replace the carbs in the recipe with oats. You would be amazed how doable this is and you won’t even notice the difference!
First, chef Xandra made her own version of the classic Tortilla de Patatas. But instead of the potatoes, the egg is mixed with oats for a savory morning meal.
The highlight of the cooking demo were the recipes whipped by the Quaker Oats kitchen and rightly called Oatsilog. As we all know, ‘silog is the most popular breakfast in the Philippines. This is fried egg, fried rice and the meat of your choice. Usually, it’s tapa, tocino or sausage and there’s sometimes fish (bangus) as well. The problem with the everyday silog’s is that they’re loaded with carbs, fat and oil. Not necessarily doctor-recommended for people suffering from obesity, diabetes, heart problems etc.
So why not Oatsilog? It’s been said that oats are good for the heart since they’re high in fiber and low in cholesterol. Even more amazing, they only take two minutes to prepare using the microwave!
Ladies and gentlemen, here are the Quakeroatsilog recipes made by the Quaker test kitchen and demonstrated to us by Xandra Rocha. Power up your breakfast with these dishes:
