What is the Mooncake Festival and why are the Chinese crazy about them at this time of the year?According to tradition, the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar is the time when the moon is said to be at its fullest, brightest and nearest to the earth. As such, it is a good excuse for all Chinese families to get together and celebrate the occasion.I didn't know about this until my Rotarian buddies told me we had to attend a Mooncake Party as we were co-hosts of the event. "Come one, come all! Dinner's for free with prizes galore," enticed our club ... Continue Reading...
Austerity message hits home
The buzzword among state employees now is Administrative Order 103 "directing the continued adoption of austerity measures in government." This effectively cuts all foreign and local travels, unless urgent; paid media advertisements; the conduct of trainings, seminars, celebrations and cultural or sports activities; as well as the grant of all donations, contributions, and gifts. Likewise, a reduction in the consumption of fuel, water, office supplies and electricity has been decreed, and the grant of new or additional benefits to full-time officials and employees has ... When prime rib is better than sex
My workload has consumed me this week and so it was such a relief when the presentation we were slaving on for days on end was finally delivered by our COO before congressmen and their staff at a hotel last night. It was interesting to see the country's legislators glued to the widescreen in the hotel ballroom as my dear agency appealed for our franchise extension. I feel good at being a part of a patriotic mission to secure the future of my 11,000 or so fellow employees. We need our jobs beyond 2008 and this country in dire straits also needs the billions in revenues ... Continue Reading...

Aside from not blogging for the past few days, I must be so out of touch with reality because I didn't know till yesterday afternoon that a relatively strong earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, shook Manila in the early hours of dawn. Sometimes I am guilty of sleeping so soundly that I wouldn't know it even if the whole house was on fire, and that is baaad for a mother who is supposed to be on emergency alert 24/7. But then again, I dread earthquakes so much I don't like to feel it during my waking hours (see earlier post). It all started when a big quake, ... Continue Reading...
Fahrenheit 9/11…a must see!
The dish on Bush: Fahrenheit 9/11How ironic that I should see Fahrenheit 9/11 on the anniversary of 9/11 itself. It just so happened that my acquaintance, Erick, who's an author and a believer in conspiracy theories, lent me a DVD copy of this film which the whole of America is talking about. The documentary is moderately long but I don't have any regrets at all spending my Saturday night watching writer/producer/director Michael Moore's incendiary attacks on President Bush and his administration. The docu, which won the Palme d'Or (Best Picture) in the 2004 Cannes Film ... Continue Reading...
