I get nostalgic when the name Nokia is mentioned because I grew up during their GSM phone days when the brand reigned supreme. Life was uncomplicated then. We had just outgrown the beeper. There were no apps, no Tiktok and phone activity was largely limited to emails, calls and messaging. Too bad I didn’t get to keep my old Nokia units for they would surely be collectible items now.
Fast forward to 2022. After 20 or so years since my first encounter with Nokia, am glad it is still around, being the iconic brand that it is. I have to admit it has been out of my radar for several years, but you know the saying : first love never dies. Just seeing the label gives me the sentimental feels. My heart skipped a beat when I opened the package and out came the sleek Nokia G50 in Ocean Blue which they call their “5G future-proof smartphone.”
First impressions: what a handsome phone. It certainly looks classier than its mid-range price tag of P13,990. The following are included when you buy the Nokia G50: charger, jelly case, screen protector, USB Type C cable and Quick Start Guide.
Second thing that caught my attention was the phone’s size. It weighs 220g with a height of 8.85m and a length of 173.83 mm. The display with HD+ resolution measures a full 6.82 inches and I have to say my other phone is dwarfed when they are placed side by side.
For me, this size is an advantage since I’ve started the habit of writing my articles on my phone and a big screen really helps. It also means I don’t have to squint my eyes when I read on this gadget , everything just seems to be larger than life. Construction is really solid and of high quality. The phone cover is made of Corning® Gorilla™ Glass 3 that’s hard to crack or break.
The Nokia G50 is my second phone which means I don’t use it intensively. It just served the purpose of opening emails, social media apps like Facebook, Whatsapp and occasionally taking pictures. I was surprised that it takes me at least four or five days before I need to charge again. The phone’s 5,000mAh battery is a real power house! (the caveat is that it is non-removable).
The 48 MP triple camera is another strong asset of the Nokia G50. I found it really excellent for night shots and shooting in dark environments like a dance club. Here’s a photo I took of actress Krista Miller last weekend with the cool watermark feature of the phone (see bottom left)
I used the phone to take #nofilter photos of Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu visiting Ilocos Sur as a guest of the Singsons.
Notice that out-of-focus blur (or the bokeh effect) is really good too.
With portrait shots, you can use filter levels to adjust the tone or brightness of your selfie. For this, I find that staying that Level 6 to beautify is enough 😀
The camera has other modes like Time Lapse, Slow Motion (for Video), Panorama and Dual Sight. The latter is an interesting feature that will let you use both front and back cameras, and the result is a split screen. (I still had to try this as of this writing). Pro Mode lets you manually adjust the shutter speed, ISO, auto focus and other elements. This is a standard feature in most smartphones but it’s certainly handy for those who want more professional quality photos.
With the Nokia G50 being marketed as a 5G smartphone, I feel like am head of the pack, especially now that a lot of areas in Manila now are configured for 5G network speeds. The advantage of a 5G phone is that you get faster downloads and reliable mobile connection when making video calls, playing games or streaming movies. When you think about it, the Nokia G50 is a beast when you think about its 5G capability coupled with its built-in Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor and the latest Android 12 OS.
There are no perfect gadgets and there were some things I didn’t like about the Nokia G50 like my having difficulty with the back button, or the 3.5mm headphone port being located at the top instead of the bottom. However, these are no deal-breakers and I certainly want to keep this phone.
