Just a bit of info for the uninitiated: Fourquare is a geosocial networking site that let’s you “check in” into the places you go to using the GPS capability of any of these devices: iPhone, Android, Windows 7 and Blackberry.
No matter what they say about revealing too much of your location to the public (my take on that later), I simply love it. I dig the idea of being a “mayor” of certain places (without being elected, lah!) by checking into a place at least twice. I like the fact that members can leave tips on what’s hot and what sucks in hotels and restos, what to order in the menu and what to avoid. For businesses, this is just another web invention to promote the greater good or do greater damage. And if you’re a social media strategist whose work deals with propping up online reputations, take heed. Foursquare might just as well be the new blogging, explained in two sentences or less.
Apps like Foursquare can be scary (but what’s not scary in this age of Facebook?) It’s up to you to protect yourself from potential stalkers. My advice is to check in after you have left a place, unless you’re really just having fun and don’t care 😀
