I’ve gotten my hands into the Feb. 20 issue of Time featuring young Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin with CEO Eric Schmidt on the cover. Haven’t yet read the article in full but I figure that it must be good to be employed in a company that is not only merit-oriented but casual in approach and free-spirited.
The article shows actual pictures of the Google HQ in California where employees are entitled to the following perks: free massage, haircuts by toprate stylists, three free gourmet meals a day, two lap pools, 24-hour tech support, employee lounges with recreational facilities, playrooms for the employees’ children. And yes, one is allowed to bring dogs to the workplace.
Having said so, I’ve no complaints with my present company which pays well by Philippine standards. I was thinking that I could get a higher pay in another company but the pressure would probably be so great that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my job anymore. I certainly wouldn’t one want to be like those stressed-out lawyers and businessmen I know who lose their hair (and their positive aura!) just trying to make their first few millions fast.
What I like about my present company? Comprehensive medical benefits with annual executive check-up at top-rate hospital. Five-year zero interest car plan at 60/40. Provident Fund participation with company match. Bonuses. Quarterly profit share. Clothing allowance. Sports activities. Free coffee and conference room food, unlimited internet Etc.
(And all that for smiling at customers? hehe)
Still my dream job would be one which will provide the following: Free travel. Daycare. Faster internet connection with YM . Less stiff corporate attire. Not too many rules ( and an offenses handbook that is as thick as the Bible). Longer paid leaves…
and a six-digit salary, who can forget? *grin

Google has such an ideal workplace. And you’re lucky to have such benefits. I stopped working for someone when my second daughter was born in 1987 . Sometimes I miss the environment of a workplace.

Thanks, but my story is: I’ve been to too many workplaces so I can more or less compare. Now it seems am settling down, mahirap na ring palipat-lipat at this age unless something life-changing happens, like a migration.

yan din sana ang dream ko pero knowing myself, kahit ano itapon my way, magsasawa din ako. It’s like dreaming of having your own private pool in your backyard, tapos pag anjan na, the novelty wears off. WEll, of course that does not inlcude the 6 figure salary, hehe. I can always find ways of using that.

Google is good; their workplace exemplary (what with the way they have it, as explained in your article here). It has served us well (Google). But, until now I wonder if our job–you know we belong to the same line of work–is really worth it. Sometimes I think it is, but there are times I think otherwise. Although I wont go as far as saying here that Lawyers are better off. I dunno, but it has got to do with how we “placed” ourselves to make a niche out of our lives, to the community we belong therein, etc. Maybe, if we enjoy what we are doing, it may be enough, while the compensation remarks it as bearable in ways more than the average. Just thinking. I hope I make sense, because if I don’t: contact me thru Ajay.
