In the cosmopolitan food hub that is Manila, colorfully-designed frozen yogurt cafes go head to head with ice cream parlors and gelaterias for supremacy in the field of chilly treats. I believe that froyo has had its heyday, it’s time to say a big HELLO to good ol’ ice cream (think Sebastian’s) or sharpen up your tongue for a divine taste of Italy – gelato oh gelato!
My must-try of the week are the frozen desserts at Sol Gelato. We went to this quaint spot at the Venice Piazza in McKinley Hill after gorging on dishes from the Food Adventure tour. Being a passport holder entitles one to three different flavors of their gelato, served in a small cup. My heart instantly skipped at the taste of Ferrero chocolates in the frozen cream, with a hint of hazelnut and wafer that Ferrero is known for. I LIKE!
The excitement doesn’t end there because Sol Gelato has more divine flavors. I certainly went gaga over their Dark Chocolate Guinness – think beer in your gelato!
There’s also Irish Cream (with a hint of Bailey’s), Nutty Nutella, Stracciatella (chocolate chips), Mint Chocolate, Cherry Cheesecake, Tiramisu, Hazelnut Coffee Crumble, and Chocolate, among others. There’s actually new additions and great new flavors to look forward to each week.
We were able to meet the owner Kenneth Lim who seemed to be hands-on in managing the place with his girlfriend, Kats Gao.I can see their passion for their venture which makes Sol Gelato a vibrant place to be in at Venice Piazza. Kenneth even educated us on some facts like the difference between ice cream and gelato.Apparently, the former has higher fat content. Gelato is also creamier, richer in taste and doesn’t have to be fully frozen when served.
