Iris Mittenaere of France, who stands 5 feet 7 inches and is a Dental Surgery student, was proclaimed the 65th Miss Universe in glittery ceremonies that was broadcast live to the world from the SMX MOA Arena in Manila, Philippines.
In this file photo from the Miss Universe website, Mittenaere is shown enjoying with residents in native costume during a visit to Baguio City.
Her bio from the Miss Universe website describes the 23 year old Mittenaere as a fan of extreme sports like skydiving. She also loves “travelling the world and cooking new French dishes.” She’s also a proud volunteer of a few non-profit organizations in her native France like Bienvenue-Tongasoa and Les Bonnes Fées.
“She hopes to advocate for dental and oral hygiene,” according to her page in missuniverse.com.
“It’s the first time in 17 years since a European won the Miss Universe, so it’s about time. The last one was Miss Russia Oxana Fedorova who was dethroned because she could not fulfill her duties,” noted our resident pageant expert Ojie Lucman who was watching the show live at the MOA Arena.
Mittenaere succeeds Filipina Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and will be based in New York City upon starting her reign.
The other winners are Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier, first runner-up and Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar, second runner up.
The Philippines’ very own Maxine Medina made it as far as the Top 6 finalists, but it seems she failed to convince people during the crucial Question and Answer portion. Apart from those who were proclaimed winners, rounding off the Top 6 candidates were Miss Kenya Mary Esther Were and Miss Thailand Chalita Suansane.
For the Top 9 finalists, included were Miss USA Deshauna Barber, Miss Mexico Kristal Silva and Miss Canada Siera Bearchell.
