Mama’s Bar & Restaurant Boracay: the largest servings this side of Phili …

And by Phili I meant Philippines. The mouthwatering Philly cheesesteaks at The Cheese Steak Shop in Manila is another thing :).

Anyway, when in Boracay, I recommend you try Mama’s Bar, Restaurant & Chillout Lounge. Located in the area called Yapak, it’s a little out of the way from the mainstream restos of White Beach but worth the penny if you’re hankering for good sausages and great German food. This little dive is currently listed as the No. 1 restaurant in Boracay in Trip Advisor, the top travel review website by independent travellers (where am a senior contributor, by the way). Being No. 1 is quite a feat considering the competition among restos in the island. I doubt it if Mama’s is the top-earning one as well. But what it lacks in location, it makes up for authentic European fare.

Come with a big appetite when you go to Mama’s or better yet, make sure your companion is ready to share your food. I was certainly daunted when owner Marcus brought this schnitzel burger (P390).

More schnitzel love. I could hardly finish this huge slab.I didn’t know the breaded pork tasted so good when drizzled with the kalamansi.

The hubby with the German ancestry finished his plate of sauerkraut pork stew (P510) with no complaints. I thought the food was kinda pricey but who thought specialty food wasn’t? Budget at least $30 or P1,500 for a meal for two with those large servings.

Another must-order is the goulash or gulasch, the Austrian-Hungarian beef stew spiced with paprika and other seasonings (P560) All the entrees, it seems, come with potatoes. Don’t even think about ordering rice 🙂

The green pea soup (P170) with sliced sausages was absolutely delicious.

On Mama’s wall are scribblings from Mama’s contented patrons, most of them foreigners. I guess some of the backpackers will take inspiration from the owner who bummed around in Asia’s beach spots until he thought of putting up his own little resto. He’s not a chef nor he did take any formal training but all the recipes were handed down from his mama, hence the resto’s name 🙂

My suggestion: offer half-servings and I hope to see desserts next time!
