I can think of a few Hong Kong restos which will leave you breathless by their sheer ambiance and appearance. This one was no exception.
Gold is one fine dining restaurant by HK’s celebrity chef Harlan Goldstein. Along with Tosca and Gold’s sister resto Strip House, it was awarded last year with one star by the prestigious Michelin Guide to Hong Kong and Macau.
Gold interiors can sometimes appear tacky if handled to the extreme, but not this one. The glittering gold bar (pardon the pun) serves everything from heady cocktails to the finest vintage wines.
On to the food. I was under the impression that the servings are uber-generous ..or should I say, Western-sized? Which is just fair considering their non- Tim Ho Wan prices 🙂
My meal could have ended with this Minestrone soup (HKD$98) consisting of pesto and ‘8 kinds of organic vegetables.’ A few minutes of savoring the delicious soup and I still couldn’t get to the bottom of this bowl. Which only meant it was for sharing!
Soup plus the house complimentary bread = spell carbo loading.
Everything good so far.My main dish consisted of the 10 oz. US Colorado Lamb Chop (HKD$488) Reason for ordering: I’ve never been to Colorado! LOL. I don’t know why, but when am free to choose my dinner, there are just two things I order: salmon..or lamb. And these chops were my meat lover’s fantasies for the night. It was succulent, and I could taste its wonderful juicy flavor with every bite.
To go with the lamb: the house’s signature Black Truffle Mash (HKD78). Creamy and yummy!
Another dish to try: Italian Wild Boar Ragout Tagliatelle (HKD198), with pecorino cheese and poached organic egg in the middle.
Wine for the night: some light and zesty white wine from New Zealand – the Starlet from Misha’s Vineyard (note: the wine list marks Harlan’s favorites in red mark so it helps one in choosing).
Gladly, the chef (Harlan himself) was in the house and so… a photo op was in order!
Verdict: the ample servings and quality of the dishes didn’t disappoint. Perfect venue for an intimate dinner, but the brunch is worth checking out too
High points to the waitstaff for the good service. They warmly accommodated my luggage in the backroom after coming to the resto straight from Hong Kong airport 😉
