When in Hong Kong, I happily recommend going on a wild goose chase (pardon the pun) in any of the 1 star Michelin restaurants that serve, well….the famed roasted goose! One might argue that we have every imaginable franchise food chain in Manila but not these restos. Their locations are kinda out of the way (hence ‘goose chase) but you can easily satisfy your tummy and tastebuds for less than HKD$100.Now who can argue with that?
The first restaurant I tried a few years ago was Yat Lok over at Stanley St. in Central. The roasted goose was so juicy and flavorful that for a while there, I forgot the name of my ancestors (sorry grandpa). It was so good and the skin so crispy. This roast in Yat Lok would be the barometer of similar stuff I would taste in the future.
In photos: the roast served over rice and/or noodles. Approximate price of HKD$80 per serving.
Over the weekend, I excitedly tagged along my daughters in search of Kam’s Roast Goose in Wanchai. You know you’ve found it because there’s a line outside and we must have waited for 25 minutes to be served.
Kam’s is from the same family who started Yung Kee so it’s safe to presume they carry the same recipe. The girls and I were so hungry that we ordered several dishes.
We had the combination plates of roasted goose with roast suckling pig (HKD$82) and the one with roast pork (HKD$59). All came with a side garnish of choy sum.
My youngest Lucia liked the barbecued roast pork or char siu. Oh what a relief it was to wean her away from McDonald’s chicken nuggets for this meal, lol
The bbq pork was perfect. Moist, tender and just had the right kind of flavor
I ordered the Prince Kinsen Noddle (HKD$36) which was drizzled with sesame oil and separately came with a bowl of soup. This was ok, but we hardly touched this due to being full with the rice topping…
Likewise ordered the cured lean pork sausage out of curiosity but unfortunately, the ones from Taiwan taste better.
Side dishes of the marinated egg ($8 each) and the marinated cucumber with vinegar and garlic ($23). They’re good to have to cleanse the palate of all that meaty taste.
Verdict: Kam’s Roast Goose didn’t strike me as impressively as Yat Lok did, and the servings seemed to be smaller. But still worth trying. Here was the total bill of one hungry adult, one famished teen and a 6 year old busy with playing her toys. We ordered too much, only to have left-overs.
