If the cheery folks of 7-Eleven Philippines have their way, the next Philippine president will be determined by the number of Gulp drinks that their customers buy.
Improbable, you might say, but it has actually worked in the US for three consecutive elections, according to Jose Victor Paterno, president & CEO of Philippine Seven Corporation. Indications that Barack Obama will win first showed in the informal poll called 7-Election that 7-11 conducted along with prominent global news networks CNN and USA Today, he added.
The Philippine version of 7-Election works this way: each 2010 presidential candidate is represented by a color-coded cup (for example: yellow for Noynoy, orange for Villar, blue for Gordon, green for Gibo etc.) There are cups for “minor” candidates and the abstaining or “undecided” portion of the populace. The presidentiables are assigned a specific barcode, which 7-Eleven cashiers will scan upon purchase of their Gulp drinks.
Anyway, I do love the colorful cups. I think they’re a nice memorabilia of the coming crazy por crazy elections 😀
All votes will be carefully audited and may be verified at the official 7-Election website. Here, the public can view updates on detailed polling results and may even share their vote through Facebook.
To safeguard the integrity of their informal polls, 7-Eleven has vowed not to run out of candidates’ cups or drinks. They also claimed to be apolitical and non-partisan.
They expressed hopes that their promotion will be a fun way of “feeling the pulse” of the public on the forthcoming national elections, considering 7-11’s strong network of 450 stores nationwide.
Mr. Paterno added that their US exercise showed surprisingly accurate results. There was only one to two per cent discrepancy between actual numbers from US voters versus 7-Election participants. Hopefully, this kind of outcome will continue in the Philippines – and that’s supposing people who buy Gulp drinks aren’t underaged, or aren’t wise enough to mass purchase the GULP cups to favor trending for a particular candidate.
BTW, Ate Glow wants to have her own cup too! (Photo taken at the official promo launch in the Rockwell Tent)

this is a good strategy by 7-11…i actually already bought cups of my presidential bet and would continue to do so (especially with the hot weather!!!) anyway, i just notice in the 2 outlets where i bought the cups, that some cashiers don’t give receipts to the customers!!! i don’t know if the cashiers just don’t like my ‘chosen cup/bet’ or they’ve just forgotten to give the receipt. but you may ask, what’s with the receipt? the receipt includes the code which you have to register at the 7-11 elections site. good thing for me, I am used to ask or get my receipt whenever I buy things (not just 7-11 cups)…I think it is theirs and our responsibility to ask receipts, right!
so, my advice to customers, not only of 7-11, to ask for their receipts! =)

What kind of strategy is this? Why Bro. Eddie Villanueva dosnt have his own cup?
This is so unfair and unacceptable…

I Think its time to make a wake up call sa lahat ng mga tumatangkilik ng 7-Eleven… May Mini Stop naman! its to make a move, palagay ko magiging “Bigger Stop” na ang “Mini Stop” … its unfair ung pagtrato nila sa ibang presidentiable, na itinuring lang nila na “minor presedentiable” kung sa bagay wala nga namang pera ang kandidatora ni Bro Eddie at ng Bangon Pilipinas, kaya walang pang bayad para magkaroon ng separate cups… sana hindi nalang nakialam ang 7-11. kasi parang tinapakan din nila ang milyon-milyong supporters ni Bro Eddie…
LD says
THIS IS UNFAIR AND A BLATANT ABUSE TO THE COLLECTIVE WISDOM OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE!
BAKIT WALANG INDIVIDUAL CUP SI BRO EDDIE VILLANUEVA? AND WHY DO YOU LABEL MINOR CANDIDATES? THIS IS VERY UNFAIR! WHAT KIND OF CORE VALUES DO YOU HAVE?
May “minor” candidate ba na makapupuno ng luneta? May minor candidate ba na may makinarya na hindi binabayaran bagkus ay kusang nagbibigay ng tulong para kay Bro Eddie!
YOU MUST MAKE AN INDIVIDUAL CUP FOR EACH CANDIDATE!
God bless!
green says
MINOR CANDIDATE? EDDIE VILLANUEVA? MINOR CANDIDATE? O’CMON! MAG-SARA NA KAYO!
ABCDE FGHIJ says
“MINOR” Candidates, eh? Bakit, sobrang wala na bang chance yung ibang candidates at tinawag mo silang “minor” candidates? Com’on. You are not being fair. Respeto lang. You do not have to categorize them as Major, Minor or whatever candidates.
I think, 7-eleven is being unfair in producing those cups. Dapat lahat ng presidentiables may sariling cups. Hindi yung top 5 lang. Nakakainsulto, di ba?
“They also claimed to be apolitical and non-partisan” – Don’t you think that by producing individual cups for the top 5 makes 7-eleven a non-partisan corporation? How about the other 5 candidates? Why not give them a chance to stand out?
God bless you. 🙂

sayang……………..
mga supporters pa naman ni bro. eddie willing bumili ng kahit ano, e ung mga tshirts and ballers nga binibili namin..yan pa kaya???
sayang 7-11, medyo nadisappoint kami..
boboy says
pwede kayong gumawa ng cup para kay eddie villanueva at ibigay nyo sa 7-11 kung gusto nyong may cup din sya he he he
cesar says
Nagpupunta ba kayo sa 7-11? sino nagsabi na walang cup si bro eddie or kahit sino mang presidentiable? meron po lahat cup, May undecided cup pa nga eh. Yung mga minority candidates nagsama sama sa isang cup, you just have to tell the cashier kung sino yung pinili mong candidate sa cup na yun.
