When I was still working in an office, we had executive health check-ups every year and “fatty liver” would come up in the findings of some colleagues. This is how I got to know about this disease and how prevalent it is. Thankfully I don’t have it but it’s always worth getting tested especially if one has high use of alcohol, has history of hepatitis, is underweight or obese, and taking medications for a long time.
For example, did you know that taking herbal, natural supplements can damage the liver? When taking medications prescribed by the doctor, it is also important not to exceed the recommended dosage.
In a recent conference, Dr. Allan Jay Domingo – Sanofi Aventis Consumer Health Care Country Medical Lead – underscored the importance of the liver as one of the largest organs of the body which removes bacteria from the blood, digests the food we eat and converts it into energy, and overall detoxifier, among other key functions. It is the body’s “silent hero.”
According to Dr. Domingo, there is a misconception that alcohol drinkers are the most commonly affected by liver disease – one that is called Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD). Symptoms can include fatigue, pain in the upper right abdomen, enlarged breasts in men, red palms
and yellowing of the skin and eyes, a condition called jaundice.
Contrary to common perception, there is also a liver disease called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in which a person has fatty liver even with little or no alcohol consumption. What is alarming with NAFLD is that its symptoms usually have no physical manifestation. In such cases, signs include fatigue, pain in the upper right abdomen, and enlarged stomach.
A physical exam, ultrasound and blood tests can tell people about the condition of their liver and check for problems. You can also take care of your liver by observing a balanced diet, exercising regularly, avoiding environmental pollutants and being health conscious always.
Foods like berries, oatmeal and garlic and drinks like coffee and green tea are also good for
your liver.
If you want to improve your liver function, taking medicine like (Phospholipids) Essentiale® Forte P is also recommended. It contains purified EPL® (Essential Phospholipids) which is extracted from natural food with precise technology from Germany. It can be easily absorbed by liver cells.
Essentiale, an over-the-counter medicine, is clinically proven to strengthen liver health
by promoting the repairing function and regeneration of liver cells.
