Sentro 1771 is one restaurant in the metro I’d highly recommend for those in search of good Filipino food. If I had relatives returning from abroad, they’d surely find comfort in Sentro’s most famous dish, the corned beef sinigang..or the kare-kare, pochero, adobo, boneless crispy pata and the all-day breakfast treats I wrote about before.
Sentro 1771’s menu is quite long and I’ve only discovered recently that for ‘alternative eaters’ (the vegetarians and pescetarians), they have one of the most extensive selection of dishes on offer too. Since Holy Week also means abstaining from meat for Catholic devotees in this part of the world, Sentro’s line-up of light, healthy dishes should be a viable option.
We ate at Sentro Greenbelt recently and I found bliss in their Camote Cups (P240) … sweet potato carved to contain delicious fillings of stir-fried cabbage, carrots and beans.
I was intrigued with the Tofu Steak Tocho (P120) which could qualify as a vegan dish. Tofu cubes were mixed with onions, beans, and salted beans or tausi. I just wish this didn’t come out too ‘watery.’
For those who prefer to eat mostly fish this Lent, the Fresh Smoked Fish Spring Rolls (P260) are a must-try. It’s simply exquisite with its filling of tinapang bangus, salted egg, mustasa, onions and tomato.
Then forget about ready made processed fish most supermarkets seem to offer these days. Sentro’s Escabeche (P190 per 100g.) is freshly-caught whole fish in a pleasing sweet-sour sauce and seasoned with garlic, ginger & turmeric. This photo courtesy of Sentro 1771.
Here are the other healthy dishes we espied on their menu: Tomato Kesong Puti Salad, Naked Lumpia with Vietnamese Crepe, Stir-fried Ampalaya and Malunggay, Sinigang Fish of the Day in Tamarind & Guava Broth, Tilapia Fillet in coconut milk, Sizzling Tofu plus many more.
