Some Twitter friends were asking me yesterday if it was my birthday because I posted a status about renewing my driver’s license. And I said no. I’ve just been sort of walking around on needle pins by driving around with an expired one. Hahaha. I must say don’t imitate because only a crazy girl like me can do that 🙂
I really can’t remember the details of my LTO drivers license renewal the last time. So I was told it’s every three years now. Even so, the waiting time was quite long even if it was done in a mall. Maybe it was all a matter of timing? It was, after all, the beginning of the year and people have just come from the Chinese New Year’s holiday.
I chose to renew my license at the Metropoint Mall in EDSA-Pasay Rotonda since it’s near our place in Paranaque. I’ve used this mall for renewal before but I never remembered it this jampacked. Maybe I was just having an unlucky day! There are a few LTO Drivers License Renewal Centers (DLRC) in malls in Manila and some people were telling me that the process was fast in some locations and there were hardly any lines!
Welcome to the Third World. This DLRC in the mall had airconditioning but there was a pail in the middle of the seating area because water was leaking from the faulty aircon above. Hope you fix it soon LTO 😉
Here’s a step-by-step on how to renew your driver’s license (at least from how I remember it):
1. Fill out the application form with your important details. They will ask for your old license so remember to bring it. They also asked for the OR or Official Receipt but I said I didn’t bring it, and this was okay.
2. I waited more than 30 minutes for my name to be called for Step 2 which was an on-the-spot medical exam. Thank God there’s no more drug test where they collect the urine. So basically, I stepped on a weighing scale so they’d know my weight (and it’s actually inscribed on the new license!) Afterwards there was an eye exam where I learned that my vision has now deteriorated to 20/40…lol. Then a girl took my blood pressure and it was normal.
3. Passed! So I waited for my name to be called again for the taking of the photo which will appear in the license.
4. Another round of waiting to pay the cashier. License plus late renewal amounted to fees of 493 pesos.
After this, I just had to wait for my new license to be printed (e.g. laminated card) but rather than sit it out and wait anew, I decided to take my lunch and kill time shopping/window shopping in the mall.
The whole process took close to two hours (whew!) and I guess you’d be lucky if it’s over in 30 minutes.
