All eyes are on President Duterte’s beloved city of Davao which has experienced unprecedented progress of late. For good reason, Davao is the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area so it is but natural that it is now a hub of activity with construction and infrastructure that can rival other major urban centers.
One of the most ambitious projects to be undertaken is the P10 billion Davao Global Township located in the Matina district. The area used to be the Davao City Golf Club which was the first and oldest club of its kind. Phase 1 of DGT is masterplanned to have 2 residential towers, a retail strip with cineplex and outdoor retail spaces, one civic center and a Corporate Center with a total of 93,000 sq m gross floor area. It’s expected to be completed in 2022.
DGT is not just a commercial venture, however. It has decided to give back to the community by hosting the Continuing Education Program of the De La Salle University in the premises of the township. The campus will be named as the DLSU Villa Abrille Center for Professional Development.

As a reference point, the Villa-Abrille family are the people behind the homegrown development of the Davao Global Township. They developed Davao’s first residential subdivision in 1952 and are now into the leasing of commercial offices and buildings such as the Matina IT Park and Sutherland Global Services. To develop DGT, they have partnered with Cebu Landmasters Inc. and formed an umbrella organization called the YHEST Realty and Development Corporation.
YHEST president Fred Yuson, a fifth generation descendant of Francisco “Juna” Villa-Abrille and himself a La Sallian noted:
” This has always been the vision of our family. These are exciting times for Davao and the Philippines and we are happy to have partners like DLSU embark on new projects with us.”
Here are the key details of the partnership with DLSU –
- YHEST will provide 4,000 sq m of prime office space accessible via ground floor entrance on the 2nd to 3rd floors of the Corporate Center to be erected inside the Davao Global Township
- P10 million in seed fund will be allocated by YHEST to assist operational requirements of DLSU and provide them basic interiors for the facility
- DLSU will be able to use the allotted space rent-free for the next 25 years
- DLSU will issue a certificate of donation on the cost of construction and annual rent equivalent
When finished, the DLSU center for continuing education inside DGT is expected to attract professionals and students who wish to pursue further studies around the area of Davao and beyond. DLSU has vowed to develop a pioneering program in Davao that caters to capacity-building for future critical trends.
