After the oversupply of nursing students – some of whom have found themselves jobless and unable to leave the country, until the next demand wave occurs – culinary courses are getting to be the next popular choice. I know of a lot of friends whose sons or daughters want to go to culinary school. One of the reasons is probably the field’s glamorization brought about by the rise of celebrity chefs (think Jamie Oliver) and reality competition shows like Top Chef. Another factor is passion and inclination. I, for one, would rather deal with pumpkins and chicken meat than blood 😀
The only downside is that it’s quite expensive to go to chefs’ school (though I imagine this is still way cheaper than going to Les Roches hotel school in Switzerland). In an event last week, I was able to visit the Magsaysay Institute of Hospitality & Culinary Arts (also known as MIHCA). Here I learned that their certificate programs in Professional Culinary Arts Studies and Professional Baking & Pastry Arts Studies cost Philippine peso P180,000. This is for seven months of study which includes four months of hands-on training in MIHCA’s school facilities and three months of practicum or apprenticeship.
Aside from this, the Magsaysay school has courses on Food & Beverage, Housekeeping, Bartening, Barista and Household Services. I guess graduates of this school has the edge since Magsaysay is a renowned shipping and manpower placement company for cruise ships like the Star Cruises.
How can you enter the school? You just have to pass the admission test, interview and medical exam. People as young as 18 years old can study to be a chef. They may be a high school graduate with one year related professional experience or must have finished two years of college.

I am writing this letter to complain about ASHA Group of Companies failure to remit SSS and Pag-ibig monthly contributions of its employees. The company consistently deducts monthly contributions from its employee’s salary but always fails to remit them.
An employee, who wishes not to be identified, claimed that he worked for the said company for more than three years but when he verified his contribution it’s less than 10 (should be 36). After learning about the matter, the employee repeatedly asked the office to settle this matter but the company have not done so. The company became literally deaf to the employee’s plea.
This is not the first time that an employee sought redress regarding the unlawful and unfair practice. Hence, this is not an isolated case.
Under Social Security Act of 1954, it is the duty of the employer to remit the contributions without the need of any demand by the employee. Failure to remit by the employer of employee contributions is prohibited and penalized by the SSS Law.
ASHA Group of Companies boasts of providing excellent service to its customers; it prides itself on having passion from within. I wish that the same passion and compassion could be extended to their employees.
