Two drinks that make a difference in my life – coffee and Coca-Cola. The first is my morning comfort. The second is my all-around elixir for going through the day. The history of modern food wouldn’t be complete without a bottle or glass of Coke gracing our tables. You see, Coke is to food in the same way that honey is associated to bees and cows are to pasture.
Truth is, I wouldn’t listen to you if you ever tell me that drinking Coke worsens our ‘bilbil’ (beer belly). Most likely, I will just tell you to stop eating rice! I had a difficult pregnancy the last time but I was up in glee when my doctor told me that yes it was safe to drink Coke, with “in moderation” being the key words.
Wouldn’t you agree with me that we simply crave for this carbonated drink when we’re eating something? It doesn’t matter if the food is greasy, spicy, savory or bland, we simply gotta have Coke! It is one of the greatest secrets ever – what is Coke’s ingredients that make it addicting and intoxicating? We will never know it seems. I read somewhere that the secret formulation is kept somewhere in a bank vault in the US, while the rest of the world craves and guzzles it by the minute.
Coke is synonymous to fun and good company. Of course I’ve heard about people consuming a 1.5 liter bottle by their lonesome, but that’s another story. During a recent office celebration for our boss’ birthday, we feasted on a whole lechon made even tastier when paired with a glass of Coke.
And during my recent trip to neighboring Taiwan, we simply had to have Coke to go with all the delicious food we ate there.
Other chow we feast on where drinking Coke is simply a must! It makes our tummy go for the yummy 😀
Hamburger! (make it with fries)
Adobo rice….
Binagoongang baboy….

Miss Ajay,
Nice work as always. I try to recall one big event to write about but my memory is a slideshow of wonderful family gatherings and all of it are with Coke. An honorary member of the family, a witness to the good times, a punctuation mark to all celebrations I’ve been part of.
The common denominator for memorable gatherings: a) Great Food ; b)lots of laughter ; c) lots and lots of Coke!

I considered coke as a member of our family, kasi kung walang Coke hindi kami masaya sa hapag kainan, kaya bago mag simula ang kasiyahan dapat may Coke litro sa aming kainan, dahil sa Coke nagiging happy ang bawat isa sa pamilya.

In our house we never missed a day without 1.5 or 2 Liters of Coke because of our big family it is definitely emptied by the end of the day. It doesn’t matter what kind of food or snacks we eat, as long as there is Coke with the meals definitely, THERE IS NO UNFINISHED PLATE IN THE TABLE. ^^ Coke gives us a very good appetite and complements our food to make it so delicious. There’s no other softdrinks that’s tastes good like COKE. ^^

Let me answer this with a poem/rap/song if I may..
What food goes best with a coke drink?
Damn there’s so much that I can’t think.
Almost everything goes best with it,
Even with the weirdest food it’s sure to be a hit.
May it be lunch, snack, or dinner time,
You can enjoy coke almost anytime.
May it be cookies, chips, bread, or rice,
You can enjoy coke with almost any size.
It’s the perfect drink for everyday meal,
with coke, happiness you will surely feel.
Coke is the best! so drink up:)

There’s a splendid variety of food that comes to mind when I think of drinking Coke–especially during Christmas!
In my family, Christmas has always been the most special time of the year. It’s a truly splendid season to celebrate with plenty of delectable food and meaningful gifts, all shared with relatives over the joyous melodies of Christmas carols–and glasses of ice-cold Coke!
Balikbayans in our clan usually arrive during December. They would come from all over—California, Toronto, Michigan, Bahrain, Taiwan—for a yearly reunion. Aside from the pasalubongs that they would bring, it’s a real delight to see and hug them, listen to their exciting stories and adventures in faraway lands.
It’s not a surprise that our house is usually bustling with chatter and laughter during the Christmas season. Relatives not just from abroad but also from other provinces would come by, asking how so-and-so are doing. Playful children would scamper around while women would gather at the kitchen and guys would be watching basketball on TV.
Then there’s the food, my favorite part about the holidays. As a tradition, our traditional noche Buena would consist of arroz caldo (made with native chicken), spaghetti (the sweet Filipino style, of course, with lots of hotdog), pork BBQ, ham and buko salad. I get hungry just listing down all these sumptuous food! They’re all perfect with Coke!
We would feast after Misa de Gallo, thanking God for a blessed and bountiful year. Gifts, primarily to inaanaks, are given on Christmas Day itself, when eager little tykes would enter our doors and place our hands to their foreheads. And this tradition wouldn’t be complete without Coke, which we would drink!
All is well, the crisp December air making everything even more pleasant. There’s nothing in the world a Christmas celebrated with Coke!

coca cola is one of our favorite beverages during special occasions or family gatherings. Actually, even though I’m on a diet, I can’t resist to drink this fizzy coke we always have in the fridge! It makes me feel fresh and satisfied during meals.
I really don’t know what makes people addicted to this drink but I really do love it and it is a perfect drink for snacks accompanied with pork skins (chicharon), rebisco, and pansit. It is also best with popcorns and watch DVD’s at home and best to offer with visitors.
One more thing that I love about coke is the commercials being aired on television, they are about family, especially during christmas, I can feel the most anticipated event which is christmas whenever I see coke commercials where you can acquire good morals and realize the importance of the family, in fact, drinking coke can be a way to make memorable moments with your family and friends.

“Why Coca-Cola has become a part of my life”
In May, 1886, Coca Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia. John Pemberton concocted the Coca Cola formula in a three legged brass kettle in his backyard. The name was a suggestion given by John Pemberton’s bookkeeper Frank Robinson.
The soft drink was first sold to the public at the soda fountain in Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886.
My goodness May 1886??? The year Coca Cola was invented by Dr. John Pemberton? I was not even existed at that time. Coke existed before the day I was born which is September of 1984. And by that time Coca-Cola is well established in the market until now.
So no wonder why it become’s part of my life or our lives as Filipino’s because a bottle of Coca-Cola on the table in every Filipino meal is like an appetizer for eating. We Filipino’s just love to have a bottle of Coca-Cola every time we eat, right?? More especially on important occasions of our lives.
Coca-Cola is a part of every Filipino lives.

My late grandmother often refers to other soda’s with Coca Cola, just like she used to refer to all brands of toothpaste with Colgate hahaha. Truth be told, I am a Coke junkie. Thus, for me, Coke is the perfect foil to ANY dish. It is the star of the show – the piece de resistance!
All my senses come alive at the mere thought of drinking ice cold Coke. Popping open a can, a warm
fuzzy feeling envelops me as I breathe in its distinct aroma. Its fizzing when touched by ice makes me week in the knees. It soothes parched me like no other beverage can.
As I write this, I cannot help but smile. That is the magic of Coke. It makes everything better.
Coke truly is happiness!

In our province in Batangas I can still remember when I was just a kid, my mom didn’t allow us to drink coke or any carbonated drinks. But whenever there is a visitor in our house she would send me to the nearest sari-sari store to buy a liter of coke, wow! I would hurriedly obliged for that would only be the time that we were allowed to drink coke.I will patiently wait for our visitor to leave for the remaining coke in the bottle would be ours. But those were the days, now I can drink coca-cola whenever I want to, no other meal would be complete without this drink. Even simple viands like “ginisang sardinas with miswa”, but with coke as partner, my burp would be heaven, a mixture of sardines and coca cola, satisfaction complete. I became the favorite of my husband’s grandmother because of coca cola, she is 80 years old and would like to eat together with my family because of coca cola, coz she know that our meal wouldn’t be complete without it!

Coke reminds me of the simple yet memorable reunions of our family and relatives. Our reunions will never be complete without Coke and pancit together with fried chicken and lumpiyang shanghai! Since my Grandmother and Grandfather (the host of our yearly reunions) loves Coke and they are very loyal to it even though a lot of beverages have come along. The saddest memory of Coke in my mind was when my Grandfather was very sick, at that time we all know that “it’s the time”….He was asking a lot of his favorites at that time and Coke was one of them (this is a true story). Up until now, every memorable event in our lives, from weddings to my graduation to simple birthdays, Coke never left our side and surely, till the nest generation in our family, Coke will always be a permanent part of the family.

In our brood of seven children, mealtimes and snack times were a riot. We marked special occasions, anniversaries, holidays, and celebrations happily, if noisily, with close family and relatives around the dining table with good food, specifically ang walang kamatayang pansit or spaghetti and Coke.
Back then, when Coke Family Size first came out, Mama would pour the contents of the bottle equally among us all, no matter that a bottle was supposedly good for five glasses. Hating-kapatid, walang lamangan. When times got better, we would buy more bottles of Coke Family Size for second servings or for storing the rest for sharing later.
However, if anyone would come home late, his/her portion was kept in the fridge. When someone noticed that the stored food and the Coke were more than everyone else’s share, Mama would explain that the latecomer, most likely hungrier and thirstier than the rest who had already partaken of his share, deserved a little bit more.
At first, the original crown cap made resealing half-consumed Coke Family Size bottles quite a task. An unattended cap would invariably get lost, as a younger sister would play with it, “washing clothes” in her tiny batya. The launching of the resealable cap was a smart move by Coke.

Pardon me for there is really not one specific food that comes to mind when I think of Coke, simply because Iots of food comes to mind. Filipino, Chinese, American, Japanese, any cuisine, you name it! Popping open a bottle or can of Coke gives me this cheery feeling of comfort and plunges me into happy memory lane. Never have we celebrated any occasion without Coke. From simple birthdays, to joyous Christmases, lovely weddings and even those ordinary days where we feel simply burned out. Coke never fails to put everyone in my circle of family and friends in a great mood. When I feel tired from work, I grab a bag of chips and sip a bottle of Coke Sakto… When we have family dinner during Sunday nights, we order pizza for delivery and pop open 2L PEP bottles of Coke… When I go home to the province during holiday breaks, we chow down on crispy-skinned lechon and down it ice-cold glasses of Coke… When I was still in college, I drank Coke for the caffeine fix to help me get through sleepless study sessions (kunwari pa akong gustong mag-aral, gusto ko lang magCoke)… When eating spicy hot Chinese cup noodles, definitely perfect with Coke… When we feel the “suya” taste in our mouth, we ask for Coke… Hahanap-hanapin mo talaga ang Coke. And the list goes on and on. I can blabber about all the great foods that are made more perfect with Coca-Cola. Coke has definitely been with us throughout the times, in times of sadness (to cheer us up) and in times of joy (to cheer us up even more). All I can say is that Coca-Cola: Open Happiness is definitely a fitting tagline. Cheers to more memorable occasions and simple happy days celebrated with Coke. Always Coca-Cola! 🙂

On birthday parties , weddings I attend and similar occasions would not be complete without a glass of Coke. I usually order one and have it charged to myself when it is not in the menu of the host since most of the time they serve just water or iced tea. Personally I have in mind drinking Coke with pizza and or pasta usually on a payday, which I usually have either 2 to 3 cans of Coke for the main dish or if by glass i usually have it ‘bottomless’ drink to complete my menu of choice. On a regular basis, a day or a regular meal will not be complete without a glass of Coke. As a result, we have dozens of Coke 1.5 Liter bottles at home. Visitors would often comment why are there so many empty bottles in the dining area, I usually answer that we don’t let a day pass without buying a bottle of Coke and it makes me happy when I drink one after or in between meals.

Coca Cola: A Part of Life
Life is a journey. From birth until death, we are taking these roads of life. We travel through our respective lives as the clock ticks off minutes, hours and days. Time quickly passes by that sometimes we don’t even realize it. The days may go by slowly, but the years really do seem to fly. Thus, cherishing and enjoying our moments in life with our loved ones, including our family, friends and close relatives will make our short journey meaningful and memorable.
I personally consider my journey as a good and enjoyable one. I always make my day memorable by doing silly yet enjoyable things or by celebrating special occasions with my love ones by having a Coca Cola at my side. I always associate it with almost all the food in the feast especially to my favorite food, Lechong Baboy, while having lots of chatter and laughter with other people. I consider it as one of the members of our family which bonds my family and friends together for special memories. Memories that can always bring a smile to my mind and that can last forever. Coke witnessed every single day of my life. Furthermore, it will continue to be a part of my life and influence me until my journey ends.
This coming Christmas, I will make again some unforgettable memories with my closest friends by having a glass of Coca Cola. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!! CHEERS!
Lalaine Lim says
When I entered university, I began spending less and less time with my family and spent most of my time buried in books, familiarizing myself with theories and modes of execution in order to come up with better ideas for my design class coursework. By the time I started skipping the nightly family dinner because of late org activities in school, my parents were more than worried. One night while I was pulling another all-nighter, my father entered my room with 2 cans of Coke, handed one over to me as he seated himself beside my bed and inquired about my day. Since then it has become a sort of habit, one of m parents would bring 2 cans or glasses of Coke and some late night snacks, and we would talk. It’s become a ritual that we practice especially now that I’m spending most of my time doing my thesis; sometimes even my little sisters join in.
Coke has become synonymous with “family time”. Each time I spot a can of Coke, I am reminded of the importance of my family and how I should never put anything before them.

My dad has this Coke story to tell:
When he was a small boy in short pants in grade school, Coke frequently ran a series of promos with lots of giveaways. In one particular promo, whoever completed five tansans with pictures of the different parts of the bicycle could get one free.
He was so eager to win that he’d ask his parents to buy Coke at every possible opportunity just to check underneath the tansan. At school, he’d use up his allowance to buy at the canteen; drinking Coke was great but he was after more of the tansan.
After several weeks, he had the Coke tansans except the winning crown, the one showing the picture of the handle bars. After several more weeks, the tansan with the winning picture remained elusive, but he kept on drinking Coke and checking underneath the crown.
One day, the school bully stopped him at the schoolyard. “Give me all that you have in your pocket or else I’ll box you!”
Although nervous, he tried to hide it. He didn’t like fighting. Besides, the bully was bigger, taller, and heavier than him. “Sige, if you promise not to hit me, I’ll give you the tansan with the handle bars.”
Wide-eyed, the bully gave his promise, grabbed the crown, and hurried off.
When they met a few days later, the bully was angry and was about to pounce on him. “You fooled me. You never told me the redemption period for the bicycle was over!”
He tried to reason with the bully. “You did not ask. Besides, I gave you the tansan, and you promised not to hit me.”
The bully seemed to think for awhile, then approached menacingly and wrapped a strong arm around his neck. “OK ka rin, a! Teka, what are those in your pocket—Coke tansans to exchange for free yoyos?”
The school bully remained a bully throughout their grade school days, but they became friends from that time on.
By the way, Dad loves Coke with pizza.

Coke has been a staple member of our dining table. It does so much more than quench the thirst. It’s by far the most refreshing beverage there is! Goes with any type of food, blends with every taste lingering on my taste buds. During family dinners, reunions or even just the everyday office lunches, Coke has always been the ultimate partner since time immemorial–it’s stood the test of time and newcomer brands, witnessed every conversation and laughter our family has shared. Coke is an indispensable part of my every meal and be it family or barkada time, it definitely has to be part of the stories and laughter we share. Thanks for Coca-Cola for being all that I and a billion others need a drink to be! =)

Why Coca-Cola Has Become a Part of My Life…
1. I remember that I have a photo of myself, as young as 3 years old, drinking from an 8-oz Coke bottle. I started the addiction early.
2. As I was growing up in the 80’s, I remember that the lazy susan on my grandmother’s table always had a 1 liter Coke bottle for the whole family to share during lunch time. It was always bought from the nearby sari-sari store. That is one of the fondest memories I have of my childhood.
3. When we first traveled out of the country…to the United States, Canada, China and Korea, I always chose Coke over other brands. It was like “love” or a “smile”…it is universal. Everyone in the world knows it.
4. Back in grade school and high school, we were not allowed to have carbonated drinks. I remember we had to “smuggle” Coke in our Colemans, so that we can have a drink during recess and lunch time. We took the risk even if getting caught would send us and our parents to the principal’s office.
5. When I was in college, our favorite tambayan was the isaw stand. I always bought Coke to digest those chicken and pig guts.
6. Coke is best served with chips, pizza, pasta, Filipino dishes (especially greasy ones hehe). But when you think about it, Coke fits just about every meal…no matter what food you’re eating!
7. Coke has become a habit, that I tend to order it even at fast food chains that serve other brands.
8. I’ve had a lot of gastritis attacks, and being a doctor, I know that I should lessen my intake of carbonated drinks. And yet, I still buy and drink Coke. I’m stubborn that way.
9. At the supermarket, I find myself comparing the price of Coke to other brands. It is a little more expensive. But what the heck, I don’t mind paying more for quality.
10. I’ve tried other brands, but I still go back to Coke. It is the most addicting drink in the world. I love Coca-Cola!

What makes my everyday kainan happiness? Of course, as always it’s Coke! It is our family’s breakfast beverage, which I gladly call “my dose of vitaminerals a day”, ha-ha. Well, Coke is best paired with any viand served on the table. But I liked it best paired with my all-time favorite Hot Wings of Yellow Cab, and of course, with the unbeatable crispy pata, and adobong malangkit.;)
Again, what makes my everyday happiness? I deliberately omitted “kainan”, as I come up with the answer, naturally it’s Coke! As of this writing, am having a sip of my everyday ally, My Coke-in-Can, that is regardless of the food intake I have for the day.
Further, if am asked what bev would go best with my resto/fastfood order? Undeniably, it will be Coke, it is as if am programmed to respond solely that. To boot, I would on occasion, query back, do you have it in Cherry (flavor), too? A balikbayan friend of mine handed me a can as he bought boxes of it at the duty free shop. I did like it instantaneously. Fortunately, he gifted me a box.;D

A 1.5 liter of coke on the table means feast to our family.
We’re not a well-off family which makes our dishes on the table not very festive. We were able to live and enjoy frequent vegetable dishes most of the time and be contented with them. Yet, whenever the family is complete and everyone seems to be doing great and fine, a bottle of Coke seems to confirm our togetherness regardless what’s served on our humble table, we are able to feast on the dish with a glass of coke next to our plates. That bottle of coke seems to be the symbol of togetherness in our home as we experience the happiness and beautiful laughters we share with our family on the table.
And one day when we need to go on our respective lives, alone or with a new family member, a glass of coke will always be a reminder of family and loved ones.
