Two drinks that make a difference in my life – coffee and Coca-Cola. The first is my morning comfort. The second is my all-around elixir for going through the day. The history of modern food wouldn’t be complete without a bottle or glass of Coke gracing our tables. You see, Coke is to food in the same way that honey is associated to bees and cows are to pasture.
Truth is, I wouldn’t listen to you if you ever tell me that drinking Coke worsens our ‘bilbil’ (beer belly). Most likely, I will just tell you to stop eating rice! I had a difficult pregnancy the last time but I was up in glee when my doctor told me that yes it was safe to drink Coke, with “in moderation” being the key words.
Wouldn’t you agree with me that we simply crave for this carbonated drink when we’re eating something? It doesn’t matter if the food is greasy, spicy, savory or bland, we simply gotta have Coke! It is one of the greatest secrets ever – what is Coke’s ingredients that make it addicting and intoxicating? We will never know it seems. I read somewhere that the secret formulation is kept somewhere in a bank vault in the US, while the rest of the world craves and guzzles it by the minute.
Coke is synonymous to fun and good company. Of course I’ve heard about people consuming a 1.5 liter bottle by their lonesome, but that’s another story. During a recent office celebration for our boss’ birthday, we feasted on a whole lechon made even tastier when paired with a glass of Coke.
And during my recent trip to neighboring Taiwan, we simply had to have Coke to go with all the delicious food we ate there.
Other chow we feast on where drinking Coke is simply a must! It makes our tummy go for the yummy 😀
Hamburger! (make it with fries)
Adobo rice….
Binagoongang baboy….
How about you? What food comes to mind when you think about drinking Coke? Share your stories and anecdotes and let’s all rejoice in how Coke simply rocks our world. Hi Ajay! Here’s my family’s favorite food paired with Coca-Cola:
Last weekend, our Dad decided we would eat sisig, one of my family’s few favorite ulam. Now having homemade sisig for dinner is a big event in our family, what with my mother finding out she’s “high-blood” like my father, and with the arrival of local cheap sisig takeouts. The last time we had it was like — eons ago; preparing sisig is just way too demanding.
But last weekend was different and we all gathered for the lengthy preparation: my mom and my little sister roast the meat, I and my older sis chopped the roast meat for hours! (I actually had strained hands after XD ) and my Dad did the rest. Our older brother was sick that time so we spared him the dirty work (lucky him! Haha).
Together with a bottle of Coke, it was the best home-made sisig we ever had. Probably the best meal that I can remember by far. The family-bayanihan plus the refreshing gulps of Coke in between servings (yes, several servings) made the meal memorable.
Perhaps the best meals we will always remember is the one where we enjoyed every minute eating, before eating (even with strained hands) and after. Just like Coke which has been around in the country for decades and yet it never ceases to amaze us Filipinos. I think that has to do with Coke being a family tradition, ever since I was a kid, now — like while writing this!, and years after.
