I’ve heard so much about Angels’ Kitchen in the news and from my readers, so I thought it’s about time we paid the place a visit. It’s a simple-looking cafeteria on 57 Northeast Connecticut St., a little further away from the maddening shopping crowd of Greenhills proper. This strip of NE Connecticut is interesting actually as it hosts a Bikram Yoga studio, a branch of Conti’s, UCC, an American Express bank, a couple of salons and the Konbini Tokyo store I mentioned in my earlier post.
What first greets diners is the open kitchen itself which is far from industrial, it is in fact what I would like to have for my ideal home. It’s a working kitchen, with a rectangular counter, and at the same time a showcase for the resto’s sinful desserts and take-home goodies.
The menu is quite sparse and well-organized. To begin our meal, I was almost tempted to order the Spread Sampler of Tuna Olive, Spinach Pesto and Chicken Pistachio Pate (P258) – until the server had the good mind to tell me that they DO offer a complimentary serving of the pate and melba toast. That was a nice gesture, I thought.
As with every new resto you encounter, ordering the main course proved to be a work-out. Especially in this resto where the dishes were crying out to be tried! The server highly recommended their Pinakbet Paella with Lechon Kawali (P318), which seemed to be a truly novel take on the dish. However, the blogger in me thought it has been written about already and so resolved to order it next time 😛
I was told their Binagoongang Baboy was also a bestseller and I saw tempting dishes like Beef Pot Roast, Callos, Ostrich Salpicao, Lengua Con Setas, the Honey Garlic Spare Ribs – all priced within the P320 – P380 range.
In the end, me and my friend settled for the out-of-ordinary Lamb Curry with Apple Raisin Chutney (P388) which had a drizzle of dessicated coconut for its topping and a mild curry sauce that can change the mind of anyone who’ll think twice about eating lamb. This one didn’t have the “aftertaste,” though I wished this curry was spicier and they increased the serving of the chutney.
The next dish we ordered was the Baked Salmon in Aioli Potato Crust (P378) which was sprinkled with a sweetish wasabi dressing. Nothing outstanding. It’s not necessary to order rice for this dish since the potato crust can take care of that.
Now, whoever said that this place is an Angels’ Kitchen must have been referring to their array of desserts! The Chocnut Cappuccino Mousse (P138, for a slice) was truly divine!
Their servings were not really generous for their price, but Angel’s Kitchen definitely deserves another visit. There’s something about this place which says ” come to Mama,” which in simple terms, is what TLC-infused home cooking is all about.
