Civilization has made unprecedented progress in terms of new learning and technology but sadly, old relationship stereotypes exist. The Philippines, for one is the only Catholic country in the world with no divorce and you can bet that the possibility of same sex marriage is as good as NIL.
It’s nice to know that major brand and bestselling toothpaste Closeup champions the universal right of people to love despite age, cultural differences, gender and other barriers to free and fulfilling relationships. This was made possible through the launch of CloseUp’s #FreeToLove campaign and #LoveRules interactive exhibit celebrating all kinds of love expressed through different mediums of art.
There was also a panel discussion featuring the views of millennial influencers like fitness model Katz Salao, cycling instructor EG Bautista, actress Issa Pressman and new (again) mom Andi Eigenmann who spoke about defying societal expectations when she chose to have a relationship and raise a family with champion surfer Philmar Alipayo in the far-flung island of Siargao.
Nothing personifies “love conquering all” than the story of Andi and Philmar.
Andi recalled that at the start of her love story with Philmar: “It was inevitable for us to get negative criticism because ‘we’re not bagay’ because ‘I’m maganda’ and ‘I come from a high profile family’ and he’s ‘just a person from the island. But I do believe that the right man for you shouldn’t be measured by how secure his future is or what he can give you. I can give that to myself. All that matters to me is that he has ambition, he has dreams, and we can work on that together.”
As part of the #LoveRules exhibit, four murals created by graffiti artist Jappy Agoncillo were unveiled – each highlighting a perceived barrier to relationships and celebrating how Filipino couples overcome these differences – from age and cultural gaps, the stigma around online dating, to acceptance of LGBTQIA couples.
Carmela Guno, Closeup Philippines Brand Manager, said: “We at Closeup believe that everyone should have the freedom to love, regardless of gender, race, social status, age or religion. Through our #FreetoLove campaign and the diverse stories we showcase, we hope to realize
our vision of a world where people can get closer to each other, without doubts or fears of
judgement or prejudice, ultimately allowing love to rule.”
