After our dessert overload in Bacolod, it’s now time for my little chocolate interlude in Cebu. It’s not really intentional. Just so happened that when every time I asked the waitstaff about the house bestseller, they always pointed to chocolate cakes on their glass display counter.
Don’t ask me which among Bacolod and Cebu won in the dessert category. The only thing I can say for certain is that overloading on their sweets can make you (willingly) fat 😀 I have to admit that since Cebu is a bigger city, the food scene there is more exciting. In fact, I wanna go back there soon, since some of the restos and cafes cannot be found in Manila!
Take for example Dessert Factory in Ayala Terraces which is the city’s version of the new Greenbelt Park.I immediately warmed to this coffeeshop because of the interiors and colors they used. Predominantly purple motif, plus the servers were wearing jester’s hats! The cafe had nice little touches which could compete with the cakes for your attention.
Since I was on a taste mission, the server recommended Achocolypse Now (P75), a three-layer cake with chocolate ganache that wasn’t too sweet, and peanut bits on the side. Perfect for someone like me who doesn’t like it too sugary. Still, I wished that this had a more chocolate-y taste. The best is yet to come 😛
On my last night in Cebu, the relatives and I had dinner in bustling The Walk at IT Park which all had these interesting hang-outs. After our filling baby back ribs dinner in Casa Verde at only P188 per plate, I tasted the best dessert comfort food I’ve had in a long time – the warm brownie cup (P95) at La Marea Pastry Shop & Lavazza cafe. My picture didn’t do this treat justice. It might have looked dry on the outside, all right, but pressing my spoon into the center revealed a moist cake that was crying to be savored and licked over and over again. It was that good!
The secret in eating this brownie, of course, is to mix hot and cold – warm chocolate interspersed with savory vanilla ice cream for a play of textures and flavors in your tongue. Don’t know why, but this dessert made me feel like a child begging for my milk and cookies….
assuming that as a child, I haven’t chanced upon this deliciously warm brownie cup! (shown in photo with the almond cashew sans rival)
Again, my picture below doesn’t do the dessert in picture below justice: the chocolate lava cake (P160) at the Mizu Japanese restaurant of the Waterfront Hotel and Casino was simply superb. If there was a volcanic eruption anytime soon, I won’t mind..for as long as am eating this choco lava cake. Gotta luv this lava!
My verdict:
Chocolate lava cake @ Mizu – winner, hotel category
Warm brownie cup, with a single scoop of ice cream @ La Marea – winner, mall category
…. and that’s just the tip of the chocolateberg iceberg! 😀
