I’ve long been craving for Balamban liempo ever since it’s been written about by some food bloggers, notably marketmanila. Pork belly or LIEMPO is one of my sinful joys and biting into the border where melt-in-your-mouth fat meets tender lean meat gives me one gustatory high!
Alas, there’s no sign that am going to Cebu anytime soon. Balamban is the place in the Queen City of the South where they sell the becomingly popular tasty liempo which is stuffed with herbs and other condiments in between, then roasted to juicy perfection. Imagine, my relief when we went to this place called Chic-Boy (short for chicken and baboy). They didn’t boast of offering Balamban-style liempo, but it looks like one, all right….. 😀
Some things to love about this place: its name (don’t you just love the pun on chickboy?), the pre-inflationary prices (a steaming bowl of sinigang at P49!) and the deadly, highly addicting combination of chicken inasal and roasted pork belly which are the house specialties.
One whole chicken inasal is P210, while a chunk of their Cebu lechon liempo is P155.
I ordered their individual serving of the roasted liempo (P99) which came with unlimited rice (bad for the diet!) The cooked meat surpassed my expectation and their special vinegar dip is a must-taste. Fear of the fatty liver constrained me from finishing off all the fat, although I just wished the skin that came with the liempo was crispier.
I paired my meal with the ginisang kangkong sa bawang. Again, it was good (and cheap, at 30 bucks). The last place where I ate in a wallet-friendly place was at Manong Pepe, and that was a long time ago 😀
Apart from the house specialties, Chic-Boy also serves breakfast meals like the usual tapsilog (P70), pork barbecue (2 pieces at P95) and various kinds of sisig for only P75. It doesn’t really come as a surprise since the fastfood place is owned by the same company behind Pier One bar & resto.
I just hope Chic-Boy puts up more branches soon! It’s the place to go to when one wants the ultimate Pinoy comfort food.
