Shortly after New Year, I decided to motor down with the kids to Solenad 2 in the upscale district of Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. I haven't really checked out this place ever since writing about its opening in July 2011. It was a good, sunny day and we arrived at our destination in a little less than 40 minutes! At noon, the place was already crowded and I had a hard time finding a parking spot. It was all open-air parking. Solenad 2 is designed as a sprawling strip mall, no upper storeys. Hunger pangs were gnawing at our tummies and a food bazaar in the middle ... Continue Reading...
Travelling to Sagada
Travelling to Sagada is something a Filipino should make once in his lifetime. As for me, I've always had this dream of going to Sagada but you really have to make the effort to see it. The land travel was no joke. Ten hours or so going by bus to Banaue and then another 4 to 5 hours riding a jeepney to your final destination. Along the way, you encounter zigzag roads with the mountains to your right and deep ravines to your left. I figure there are also landslides during the rainy season :) Travel to Sagada usually peaks during Holy Week and the date before New Year ... Continue Reading...
Places to eat in Sagada, Mountain Province
Will tell you more later about my milestone trip to Sagada which is one of those places in the Philippines on my bucket (fucket?) list :) I guess not many will believe me that I traveled so far to sample the cuisine, because everybody else goes to Sagada to go trekking, spelunking and to feel the cold, cold breeze. I did all those too, but the most enjoyable part for me was being ensconced in some remote coffeeshop just enjoying the good view (there was plenty!) Here's a sample, taken at Gaia Cafe and Crafts. Note the rice terraces in the background. I guess ... Continue Reading...
Hotel St. Ellis : a gem in Legazpi City
After a nightmare of a bus ride, we were happy enough to check in at Hotel St. Ellis on Rizal St. Legazpi City. The inviting lobby bathed in soft hues didn't disappoint me, and more so when I saw the bedroom. This is their standard room which looked regal enough. I agree with one of the commenters in Foursquare who said " Beware of their pillows and bed, you might not want to get up for your early flight." There's something about the pillows in the room - so comfy! I guess the only thing that works against the room is that it doesn't have a bath tub. Also, I ... Continue Reading...
Bicol Express train : the review
We made a lightning trip to Bicol a few weeks ago. Part of the crazy plan was to go by land ( even though we pretty much live beside the airport). Here it went: bus to Legaspi City (10 hours!) and on the way back, catch the night Bicol Express train departing from Naga (which is about 2 hours from Legaspi). In EDSA Pasay, we caught the DLTB Bus to Legaspi which turned out to be hellish. It didn't help that we were at the tailend of the bus which advertised itself as having wi-fi but really had none! Ride was so bumpy all throughout that I actually savored the ... Continue Reading...
