I've been busy with local travels in line with my resolve to explore more of the islands this year. But first let me tell you about my trip to our great hometown over the weekend. Even though I grew up and studied primary school in Southern Leyte, I rarely visit because it's such a pain to go here. Decades of political nonchalance has somehow deprived the area of a decent airport. One still has to travel 3-4 hours by land after deplaning in Tacloban :( Anyway, the visit to our town of Padre Burgos was just what I needed to recharge. It's nice to be in a place where ... In Cebu: the Marco Polo Plaza hotel
The Sinulog Festival 2015 is happening at the same time as Pope Francis' historic visit to Tacloban and Manila. This reminds me that I really have to blog now about my experience at Marco Polo Plaza which I had the good fortune of staying in while covering the US Potato Safari in mid-November of last year. With 24 storeys and 329 guest rooms, Marco Polo is the only hotel in Cebu that's situated on a hilltop. You know what this means: some good views. Loved the room they gave me, which had a tub and all the amenities. But the two beds made me wish I was sharing ... Continue Reading...
Eastwood Richmonde Hotel – loved the location!
Someone had given me a gift certificate for an overnight stay at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel and it made sense to use it for the long vacation. We arrived from our homebase in the South to Eastwood, Quezon City in 30 minutes or less. Eastwood Richmonde is a four-star hotel with 39 floors owned by the Philippines' largest property developer Megaworld Corp. Its lobby was grand enough and loved that it was nicely decked out ... Manila’s cheapest: Erra’s $1 ramen in Malate
I've turned my back on Malate (also known as Manila's tourist belt) a long time ago because it's dirty, crowded, decaying and full of petty thieves. It's still dirty, decaying, crowded and full of petty thieves but since am based here for work again now, I have to psyche myself up to appreciate its 'character' :) For instance, I vowed to myself to explore Malate before more of its old spots are torn down to give way boring malls and real estate developments. Only in Manila will they demolish valuable pre-War buildings like the Army & Navy Club, Admiral Hotel, ... Continue Reading...
