A few weeks ago I finally summoned the willpower to go to Puerto Galera. This was quite the big deal since I've been to Batanes, Banaue, Palawan, Camiguin, Guimaras and other remote places but not to this verdant tourist spot in Oriental Mindoro. So that Saturday, I hauled off the kids and off we traversed the southern highway till we reached the Port of Batangas. In the pier, I parked the car, purchased tickets for the five of us and off we rode the boat that would take us in an hour or so to Puerto Galera. I was quite nervous about this boat ride since we ... Continue Reading...
Day trip to Sumilon island in Oslob, Cebu
Sumilon is a private island owned by the Bluewater resorts group off Oslob in Cebu. After a surreal whale shark watching experience in the waters of Oslob town proper, most people put a visit to Sumilon on the itinerary, as it is just 20 to 25 minutes away by boat. I must say don't skip going to Sumilon if you're already in Oslob because the sandbar, with its perfect white sand beach, is just so beautiful... Travelers on a budget often just bring food and eat on the boat, before doing some swimming on the beach or just plain sailing. Boat tour operators ... Continue Reading...
Review: Amuma Spa Suite at Bluewater Maribago Beach Resort in Cebu
During the long APEC holiday last year, my daughters and I jetted off to Mactan, Cebu and stayed for several days in Bluewater Maribago resort. This is a sprawling property of about 5 hectares and is possibly one of the oldest in the island, having existed since 1989. So far, I've stayed in three upscale properties in Mactan but it seems to be in Bluewater Maribago where I enjoyed the most. This is simply because Maribago is so 'homey.' It is easily distinguished by its Filipino design, particularly the thatched roofing and the use of bamboo. This was the ... Continue Reading...
Why you should always pack light, and tips on how to do it
We’ve all seen them at the airport: the crabby passenger who is barking at the airline employee who informed him that he has to pay extra for his overweight suitcase. Or the weary-faced travelers lugging suitcases that are almost as big as they are. And, of course, the families literally running late for their flights while juggling kids and backpacks and satchels and duffels. Sure, you need to bring a certain amount of “stuff” when you travel, but some people go overboard. To make your trip as easy as possible, consider downsizing your ... Continue Reading...
Reclining great Buddha at Nanzoin Temple, Japan
It was our last day in Fukuoka. Our flight was still in the evening and we were figuring out what to do. My companion Shiela decided to explore Canal City (essentially a huge shopping mall) while I travelled by my lonesome on a JR train to see the giant Buddha of Nanzoin. Kido-Nanzoinmae is a sleepy town located about 20 minutes by train from Fukuoka. Most people overlook this in their itinerary when visiting the Kyushu islands of Japan (of which Fukuoka is a part). Am so glad I took the time because the surroundings of the Nanzoin temple were so refreshing and the ... Continue Reading...
