mosaicWLE Amazing is the word to describe the 2007 World Light Expo which is ongoing in Manila till April 22. Stepping in, the onlooker is treated to a seeming wonderland of gaily-lit pagodas, intricately-decorated gates and arches, even a 100-meter dragon made from ceramic cups, saucers and plates! I regret not having a professional camera or videocam to capture all this beauty but it sure is a refreshing experience to see the Expo, a welcome breather from the smog and shopaholic excitement which we know Manila is all about. ... Merienda at Hizon’s and precious lessons my son has taught me
Hizon's - Manila We were supposed to go to the mall that weekend but realizing that I lost my wallet (after coming home groggy from my graveyard shift), I decided to tag along my son for a cozy date at Hizon's, the venerable bakeshop in Ermita. Actually, its real name is ZA's Cafe, but people seem to forget. We always associate Hizon's for the "best-tasting" ensaymada and the name has stuck since then. For one, the appellation best-tasting is subject to much contention; "pricey" and "overrated" is a better term in lieu of the advent of much superior ... Continue Reading...
Manila’s best beef hofan is at the Malate Tea House
beef hofan When it comes to the yummiest eats in town, my Filipino-Chinese ('tsinoy') friends are the authority and I always rely on them for the ultimate lowdown on where to go and what to order, especially when it comes to their cuisine. And that is how I came to embark on my Resto Discovery of the Week, a very unassuming place near where I live and work, simply named Malate Tea House. I remember passing by this tea house before but ignoring it because it seemed to be dissociated from every resto on the block. Everything about it - from the signboard ... Continue Reading...
Can’t get enough of Lord Stow’s egg tarts
I was in Chinatown again yesterday to tour somebody and what do I stumble upon but Lord Stow's Bakery, maker of those famous Portuguese Egg Tarts! The outlet in Ongpin was so nondescript and the signboard so unnoticeable that you can walk past it. But then again maybe I was meant to taste the heavenly egg tarts that humid afternoon, with its flaky crust and melt-in-mouth custard that wasn't too sweet - just the right elements for my perfect dessert. The last time I tasted one was at Lord Stow's in Banawe close to ten years ago. It is still alive up to now, along ... Continue Reading...
Binondo Culinary Adventure Part 2, with D’Bloggers
Bloggers at Lido I've gone to Binondo three times in a row now, and it seems I would like to go there every week until my addiction is satisfied.I just couldn't have enough of this place for now. Good that my fellow bloggers, the gallivanting Eric and va-va-voom Miss V (actually we belong to the same company) were game enough to be with me on this latest food trip which saw us braving heavy rains and high water just to whet our appetites for the irresistible taste and aroma of Manila's Chinatown. ...
