"Thirty pounds lighter" ago, I made my first trip to New York City. I cherish this picture when the World Trade Center was still proudly standing. Just walking in the city's busy streets gives one an indescribable high. Until my feet got firmly rooted in this melting pot called Asia, I always thought that you made it if you conquered New York, New York! It's so geographically distant from where I am now but the good memories remain. Riding a limo from the airport, staying in Greenwich Village, hanging out, walking by Brooklyn Bridge..... here's another favorite ... Continue Reading...
Vietnamese cooking class @ Hanoi Cooking Centre
Here's what I consider the most enjoyable thing I did on this trip: take a Vietnamese cooking class at the Hanoi Cooking Centre for US$45. As they say, after you fall in love with the food, you gotta learn how to make 'em. I enrolled at the Hanoi Cooking Centre because of the good reviews this establishment got from travellers on Trip Advisor. The center's owner, Tracey Lister, is an Australian who chose to settle in Hanoi and establish an informal school, with a coffeeshop on the second floor. She is also the author of the coffeetable book Koto: A Culinary ... Continue Reading...
Ho Chi Minh: best city in Asia to have a tasty US $1 to $4 meal
... or at least that was my impression as I began to explore Saigon's culinary offerings. I am not even talking of street food yet, but chow you can enjoy in a restaurant setting. Bangkok and Manila can probably give Ho Chi Minh City a run for its money but as I said in my previous post, we're talking here of food that's good, fast, fresh, cheap and consistent, one that involves a generous serving of meat and seafood. Here's what I found: Goi cuon or fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce for three pieces at 24000 dong or approximately $1.22, 40 cents ... Continue Reading...
Potato theme Thanksgiving menu at Lolo Dad’s Brasserie
Now that it's Thanksgiving 2010 ( celebrated in the US on Thursday, November 25), what are you thankful for this year? I can think of a few heartfelt things ... a safe, happy home; the love of my husband; the birth of our baby Lucy; and feeling all of God's abundant grace. I feel that am not wanting of things right now if I choose to live life simply, and to think that life is not a race to be rich or have the biggest house on the road. Instead, I will aim to see the world and savor quality moments with my family and people who matter because indeed, life is short. ... Continue Reading...
Ristras Mexican Grill, the Fort
The awaited opening of Ristras at McKinley Hill will not push through after all. During one of our drives to Bonifacio Global City, I saw Ristras open at Fairways Tower Condominium - in the same building where Malcolm's Place and Joey Pepperoni are. We thought it best to visit, especially as going to its first branch in the city of San Juan was something I couldn't find time to do (read: far away from me) Ristras the Fort boasts of modern interiors. I could see that they have just opened, as the menu wasn't even available yet. This made it all the more confusing ... Continue Reading...
