Achiote Taqueria by Chef Robby Goco of Cyma Restaurant fame has opened in Rockwell Powerplant Mall beside Mamou Too! Chef Robby was with Ristras during its heyday until he bailed out. With this new food stop, his concept is to serve hefty Mexican fare with healthy ingredients. For example, the organic vegetables & naturally raised pork are sourced from Costales Nature Farm, free range chicken from Magnolia and kitayama Wagyu beef from Bukidnon. The resto is homey enough and there's an open kitchen for diners to see what's going on. Be warned though that the place is ... Continue Reading...
Kushiten: the best yakitori in BF Homes Paranaque
Last week, I was glad to find my Little Tokyo in the culinary wonderland that is the South of Manila. It was even good enough to transport me back to our time in Osaka where okonomiyaki and simple things like skewered asparagus with pesto sauce all tasted divine. Kushiten Yakitori and Kushiage is a cozy nook (almost like a hole in the wall) along President's Avenue, just a few steps away from my other favorite Japanese place, Kenji Tei. I get baffled by the name and only tried this place because of someone else's recommendation. Kushi refers to skewers (think ... Continue Reading...
Christmas gift idea: decadent chocolate rum cake
I attended a class sponsored by The Maya Kitchen last Saturday. Somehow, I couldn't help but think about Christmas when I saw the finished product of the decadent chocolate rum cake recipe that chef Kittin Constantino shared. I would like to make this for Noche Buena 2011. This would also be ideal for giving to friends or even selling. Apparently, the decadent chocolate rum cake is one of the dessert specialties of The Cookbook Kitchen, a resto with homecooked specialties that I still have to discover. The "cookbook" in the resto's name is actually a misnomer ... Continue Reading...
The Cheese Steak Shop: authentic Philly style sandwich now in the Philippines
The Philippines has just become the best place in Asia to get that authentic Philly cheese steak experience. That's because a pioneer store in Makati is the only Asian franchise (so far!) of The Cheese Steak Shop, a food company based in San Francisco which has been serving those great-tasting Philly-style cheese steak sandwiches for decades. Look for this yellow-lit sign when you're cruising along Arnaiz Avenue (formerly Pasay Road) in Makati. This is where the first branch of The Cheese Steak Shop in the Philippines is located. As a sandwich, I do believe ... Continue Reading...
