Pinoy taste buds are getting so sophisticated these days, what with all the international restos in Manila offering genuine French croissants, ramen, tonkatsu, yakitori, IHOP pancakes and soon the venerable cheap dimsum joint Tim Ho Wan. But there are times when you just want to escape from the culinary clutter and go back to your roots. Read: savor down-home Pinoy comfort food. This is what I felt when I dined at Sarsa Kitchen + Bar in Bonifacio Global City. The SARSA owner is thirty-something chef JP Anglo who gained fame as a judge of Junior Master Chef ... Luna Specialty Coffee @ BGC
We're spending the weekend in Bonifacio Global City because my daughter was sick and had to be confined in St. Luke's. It's a golden time to discover the cozy little nooks in the area which I wouldn't find time to check out, otherwise. One of the spots on my radar was Luna Specialty Coffee at NAC Tower (which is owned by Rep. Lino Cayetano who is the brother of Sen. Pia Cayetano of Slice at Bonifacio High Street Central). If you wonder where this is in BGC,NAC is beside the new Globe building. Entering the coffeeshop, I immediately warmed up to the cool ... Continue Reading...
Tim Ho Wan in Manila!
I can't wait for the opening of the new wing in SM Megamall called the Mega Fashion Hall which will house two of my favorites: clothing label H&M and (drum roll pls.) Tim Ho Wan, the dimsum specialists. The grapevine says this new Megamall wing will open on January 28, or before the Chinese New Year. With the arrival of foreign establishments (or franchises, whatever you like to call it), there seems to be less and less reason to fly out of Manila. Tim Ho Wan is a favorite pit stop in Hong Kong. Though they have several branches in the territory, I usually go to ... Continue Reading...
Village food: Greek Taverna Restaurant
Despite being in Metro Manila's far South, I am still thankful for little blessings. Like being 15 minutes away from the airports. And eating 'international' food when I want to, without having to go to the major malls, the Fort or Makati. Greek Taverna has been my favorite 'village' restaurant in Parañaque city for the past year and somehow, I've never written about it. Now time to divulge the secret: am at the stage in my life when I really love Mediterranean food - how it uses basic ingredients while being tasty and allowing the natural flavors to come out, with ... Homemade bangus sardines
Expect more recipe posts here because my New Year's resolution is to eat in more, rather than eat out, and I will be sharing my discoveries along the way ;) Right after the gluttony of the holidays, the usual tendency is to go meatless. It so happens that I really love our native milkfish, bangus. I dig its delicate flavor & the fact that it goes well with any type of cooking - whether mixed with vinegar (as paksiw), soy sauce (bistek) or simply pan-fried. Here's another variation..cooked in olive oil, or what's commonly called bangus sardines. This is usually sold ... Continue Reading...
