Reporting by Angelique Misa (Photo from geoffreyzakarian.com) The Next Iron Chef Season 4 winner and great culinary icon, Chef Geoffrey Zakarian was in Manila last March 20, 2014 for the Feast of Colours – Gala Dinner held at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. The event was made possible by Colours, the living magazine channel and Cignal Digital TV, and it was all for a good cause! Proceeds of the five-course gala dinner - attended by the Who's Who in Manila society - went to the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF), the country’s major ... Continue Reading...
IHOP Philippines opening more branches
It seemed only last year when the first branch of IHOP (International House of Pancakes) opened in Bonifacio Global City. Who can forget those deliriously-long lines? The queues are gone at the BGC branch the last time we checked but that's probably because IHOP has also opened in UP Town Center in Quezon City and Mall of Asia in Pasay City. MOA? Yay. So near me. If I remember right, this new branch occupies the former location of Seattle's Best, in front of the bay. I went here last week for the first anniversary celebration of IHOP in the Philippines. Was I ... Continue Reading...
VASK chef in cooking class tomorrow
VASK has been one of Manila's most celebrated restaurants since it opened last year. If you are like me who hasn't been there :) ... tomorrow's the time to sample what the Basque country and the north of Spain has to offer. This will not be in the restaurant, but in a cooking demo at The Maya Kitchen where VASK executive chef Jose Luis Gonzalez shall showcase his favorite specialties. From 9 am to 1pm, Chef Gonzalez will demonstrate how to do the following dishes: Pulpo a la Gallega Tradional or Galician Octopus Bakalao al Pil Pil with Pipperada Scallop ... Continue Reading...
How to make ramen noodle soup at home
I missed Chef Seiji Kamura's class on how to make Japanese-style ramen at The Maya Kitchen as announced here. But thankfully, I was able to get hold of the recipes he taught in the class so am sharing them here. Disclosure: the ramen recipes haven't been tested by me yet (but I will, one of these days). Best to visit Japanese grocery stores in Manila like Fuji Mart, New Hatchin, Sakura and some others if some of the ingredients are unfamiliar to you. Some of the major supermarkets like Metro Gaisano, Landmark and even SM have extensive foreign selections ... Continue Reading...
Ramen Yushoken: love at first shoyu
I've said somewhere in this blog that am not crazy about ramen, so I didn't really line up at every new ramen resto that Manilans obsessed with . Maybe because one of my first major encounters with the Japanese noodle soup didn't end on an impressive note (sorry Ukkokei Ramen Ron fans). Secondly, am not the kind of person who goes for soups. I prefer my dishes to be dry or with sauce. So I'd rather have adobo rather than bulalo, beef bourguignon rather than bouillabaisse..if you know what I mean ;) So am a latecomer to Ramen Yushoken which foodies showered with ...
