Filipinos undoubtedly like their beer. San Miguel, the most popular brand, is to beer what Jollibee is to burgers and jeepneys are to the ordinary Pinoys' means of transport. According to stats, "Filipinos consume 1.25 billion liters or 3.9 billion bottles of beer per year," most of which I believe are shared over good company and sizzling plates of sisig or some other pulutan. I honestly haven't tasted as many varieties of beer in my lifetime as when I attended the Beer Appreciation Night at Red Box, the "uber-ly wholesome" karaoke bar in Greenbelt 3 (with ... Shortage alert! What the world needs now is rice …
The government has announced a forthcoming rice shortage and rice prices have risen in the local market, as a result. You know the problem is serious when fastfood outlets go against sound business practice by announcing half-rice choices for its customers. What gives? Filipinos are known to be rabid rice-eating people and anything that will curtail their love for those white grains will be viewed as no less than a punishment. The only people who are happy with this piece of news are the health buffs who prefer whole wheat over high-carbo content. But then again, just ... Continue Reading...
Coming home to ‘Angel’s Kitchen’
I've heard so much about Angels' Kitchen in the news and from my readers, so I thought it's about time we paid the place a visit. It's a simple-looking cafeteria on 57 Northeast Connecticut St., a little further away from the maddening shopping crowd of Greenhills proper. What first greets diners is the open kitchen itself which is far from ... Continue Reading...

Royce, those exquisite, melt-in-yer-mouth chocolates from Japan, is in town! You just have to look and be patient. Chances are the growing number of Japanese convenience stores in the metro is sure to offer them, in one way or other. That's how we found Royce Nama chocos in the freezer counter of the Konbini Store Tokyo Market in Greenhills. ... Continue Reading...
Remembering Batanes food…
Stranded in Batanes with nothing else to do, Mr. Z and I found solace in food. This wasn't really easy to do. Food in the Batanes is dependent on the weather, and supplies of staples in the island can also be affected if the flights don't come in (!!) Meat like pork and beef come from Batanes itself - reason for the beautiful scenery of those cows grazing in the undulating valleys and hills. Most of the vegetables and other supplies have to come from Manila or neighboring areas like Tuguegarao. There wasn't really an abundant supply of seafood, as people like us ... Continue Reading...
