Since it’s throwback Thursday, am happy to find food that’s a blast from the past. Am talking of Jonas Pares in La Loma, Quezon City which was one of my favorite comfort food places when I was younger and much thinner. It’s a relief that they’ve expanded to more locations and there’s actually one in The Fort Strip, Bonifacio Global City.
Jonas’ specialty is the pares (P198) , a tasty dish that’s unique to the Philippines and originated by the resto itself. The dish comes in three’s actually – the clear soup, fried rice and beef simmered to tender portions. So good, if I may say.
There’s something about Jonas’ fried rice, you can easily finish a big bowl. I would learn later from the owner that their secret is combining two different varieties of rice, it gives this staple a different texture.
There’s a separate menu for the different Jonas branches in the metro. Because it’s in an upscale location, health-conscious diners of Jonas BGC who prefer a low-calorie diet can opt for this fillet of salmon dish with a delicious teriyaki sauce.
Salted egg is all the rage now. But Jonas owner Lolly Tiu is proud to say that she started using salted egg a long time ago in her restos, which includes the Chinese restaurant Zong. This fried chicken with salted egg breading (P245) is a must-try.
You can also order good ol’ mami. I mean look at that: dumplings, chicken and beef in one glorious soup creation. I bet it will fill us up in no time.
But I really went crazy for the pancit bihon, it’s the best I’ve tasted in a long time. Only P360 during snack time or merienda and comes with free Coke or iced tea, good for three to four persons already.
Look for this counter when eating at Jona’s coz it has pretty good stuff: the salads, cakes and take-out food items. My favorite is their chunky siomai (about P220 per pack). I always love pairing it with chili sauce, soy sauce and of course the house fried rice.
We really ate a lot that night. Aside from those i mentioned, Jonas Pares BGC has kani sandwich, kikiam, tempura, salt & pepper spare ribs, and lechon paksiw among others.Their breakfast specialties at P195 up comes with free organic Batangas coffee.
On the Friday of our visit, there was even an acoustic musician and we had fun singing along with him.
Thank you Jonas owner, the gracious Lolly Tiu, for hosting our merry band of bloggers. However, am really an avid customer since I’ve eaten in Jonas BGC a few times since it opened last year. The pares is real comfort food I will never, ever get tired of having.
