Today is my birthday, and of all days, am choosing to write about this newest beauty product am trying – Biotulin Supreme Skin Gel, Made in Germany and developed in the US. It’s a cult celebrity product that has gotten the thumbs up from power users like Michelle Obama, the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, Madonna, designer Karl Lagerfeld and Kim Kardashian, to name just a few.
The good news is that Biotulin is now available in the Philippines, initially through select branches of Flawless Skin clinics throughout the country.
Before I make the review, let me just say that this is a great era to be old, thanks to technologies that have been developed to prevent aging and prolong life! As a matter of principle, I have not made a habit of declaring my age in social media because age shaming and age discrimination are real. However, looking good is always the best revenge. We would be a fool not to make use of advancements in beauty science these days. Coupled with a good diet and exercise, today’s middle-aged generation can indeed look younger than during our parents’ time! (just don’t overdo the injections 😀 )
Anyway, I was truly excited to try Biotulin which is hailed as the organic version of Botox. Whereas the latter is derived from needle injections containing Botulinum Toxin, Biotulin comes from ” Spilanthol, a local anaesthetic extracted from the plant Acmella oleracea (paracress).” It is natural, fragrance-free and can be applied topically like cream or lotion.
Here are its ingredients as listed in the box:
At the Flawless clinics, we can only use Biotulin in combination with Fractional Needling Therapy (FNT) which is a procedure that uses micro needles to infuse the serum into the skin. It seems Caucasians can apply the gel directly because they have thinner skin but since we are Asians and have a different skin composition, the pores have to be opened up through micro needling to absorb Biotulin better.
My attending doctor in Flawless, Dr. Cleofe Memije, explained the process more clearly –
So this is how my session went:
Cream anesthetic was used on my face and left to absorb for 30-40 minutes. (the word ‘anesthesia’ is usually frightening but this is really painless)
The microneedling or FNT that followed was painful though! Still tolerable, but I can just imagine it would really hurt if you have a pimple or something with hundreds of needles pricking your delicate facial skin. Am not sure am looking forward to another one but we can always suffer for the sake of beauty (in other words…. tiis Ganda!)
The microneedling went on for 15 minutes and I felt my face puffy and reddish after. However, I think I reacted well to the treatment because I had dinner immediately after and went on my normal duties. The doctor did promise there’s no downtime.
Here’s how my face looked like within the next three days. It looked sunburnt and my face felt extremely dry.I was advised against wearing makeup and I followed that, but I couldn’t resist putting on a hydrating mask because I was panicking at how dry my skin felt.
My skin was peeling within the first week but it just kept getting better after that. I felt an improvement in my problematic undereye circles and my face looked very smooth as shown in these selfie photos –
My favorite is this photo taken over the weekend. I was attending a Halloween party in Pan Pacific Manila and I love how my face still looked fresh at 9 pm, despite being busy all day 😀
There are two ways to avail of the Biotulin promo at Flawless which costs P15,000: have three microneedling (FNT) sessions or have only one FNT and take home the 15ml Biotulin bottle after that. I am having the three FNT sessions and am scheduled to have my second one soon.
