There is something about the Manila Christmas this year which is a bit more somber than the previous years. Just the same, we have to get on with the business of buying Christmas presents because it's called for by tradition. Maybe it's the economic situation but the department stores don't seem so crowded and the traffic is not as bad. All I know is that I am almost through with my Christmas shopping list but somehow it gets longer because there is always someone I forgot to include on the list. I also attended my first two Christmas parties last week and they were ... Continue Reading...
Sugar High Friday: Banana Pistachio Crunch
Banana Pistachio CrunchOriginally uploaded by annalyn. I have just discovered Is My Blog Burning? or IMBB and I like participating in their activities because it gets me in touch with fellow foodies from all over the world who I could learn a lot from. As a result of surfing all the great food sites from Italy to France to California, I have also launched a separate food blog called Munchin' in Manila which is actually just a compilation of my food-related posts here, and then some! (It's a wonder how I make the time). Hopefully, this will motivate me to spend more ... Continue Reading...
Bridget Jones frame of mind
bridgetOriginally uploaded by annalyn. Finally saw Bridget Part 2 movie because hopeless romantic self is a sucker for happily-ever-after-movies. Good to hear that Bridget ends up on the altar with dashing Mark Darcy despite fact that she's bumbling, clumsy, and jealous of Rebecca who turns out to be a lesbian.Blimey! Movie really has absurd plot, including one of Bridget being jailed in Thailand and Mark rescuing her like some knight in shining armor. But I loved the laughs and I like the soundtrack so I must say watching movie was as good as reading book, ehmm, four ... One folklore has it that fishermen in the southern coastal towns of Italy traded their freshly-caught anchovies for the pleasure of a woman's company when they couldn't afford to pay the money up front. With all those anchovies, members of the world's oldest profession then found a way to make it into the zesty, piquant puttanesca sauce. From reading, I found out that there ... Continue Reading...
A deeply moving book
wildswansOriginally uploaded by annalyn. Two days of being sick led to something good: I was able to finish Wild Swans while wrapped in a blanket, in bed. I had meant to finish the book, which is all of 700 pages, before the year ends. But then again, I am ten years behind since my notation on the jacket said I bought the book in the U.K. in 1994 yet.Anyway, time is of no object when you read a classic and Wild Swans is up there on the list of my greatest non-fiction reads.I decided to pull it out of the shelves because of all the hype about China these days. It seems ... Continue Reading...
