I’ve been attending a lot of cooking demos lately. It’s nice to learn all these previously unheard of tips from the top chefs and it strengthens my assumption that not every detail and technique are written in cookbooks. You gotta find your own style in cooking and hear it from the masters themselves. You can only do this by seeing them up close.
YUMMY Magazine was kind enough to sponsor a cooking demo by Tristan Encarnacion, the young resident chef of the early morning show Unang Hirit. One part of Robinsons Supermarket was crowded that day with an audience who were raptly listening to Chef Tristan teach the following recipes: chicharon rice, crispy laing pockets, lumpiang sariwa and chicken curry in gata.
The magic of cooking these days! Since the event was sponsored by Knorr, it was nice to be introduced to their new products like the Langka and Laing Complete Recipe Mix and Ginataang Gulay Complete Recipe Mix. It seems these products are the easy way to cook those much-loved Bicolano specialties like laing. No more straining of the coconut milk!
Get the recipe for crispy laing pockets in my food blog. It’s like the spanakopita, Philippine edition 😀
Afterwards, editor-turned-chef Angelo Comsti also taught us how to cook popular Asian dishes like the chicken claypot rice which was culled from the August 2011 issue of YUMMY. We also received back issues, Knorr recipe cards and I even won Knorr products in the raffle. Way to go!
The magazine’s September issue is out now. I still have to buy this issue, and am excited to read the Filipino dishes they will share this time. Grab your copy from the newsstands or your favorite retailer.
